dave, The most reliable time to plan a trip in the Northern Rockies, is that sweet spot between when the snow melts up high, and fire season. You're best bet will be between mid-June and mid/late July.

Casey,
Thanks for the info. That's very helpful. I'll aim for that timeframe.

Any specifics available before the maps come out? I'd love to hear more. Maybe an elevation profile as a teaser?

I was born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho so I can say with confidence that yes, Idaho is an amazing state. Nice work, Casey and the good folks at ACA. I'm living in New Jersey now and sooooo missing my home state . . .
So here's the question: When is the Grand Depart???

Any race on this route should include mandatory soaking times.

What is the fishing like in this part of Idaho. Are the trout plentiful, small, and hungry like in the Sierras? On the JMT, my intro to fly fishing, they seemed willing to bite on anything presented reasonably well.

I've fished that country, and you'll be pleasantly surprised! There's no shortage of 10-12" native trout up high, and you can pretty much plan on some 8" pan trout. Streams are stocked - and yeah the stocker-rainbows will eat about anything. There are some truly big fish in Salmon River, Big Wood River and others I'm sure. I once hooked a fish so big I thought it was a log and lost it. Trail Creek is near the route - that was Hemmingway's favorite fishin' water - and Warm Springs Creek above Ketchum is about the best stream I've ever fished. Not clear how close we'll get to Silver Creek and some of the other storied streams in the area. Early in the season, water is high and a bit muddy so lures or big ugly wet-flies seem best. Fly-fishermen will have more fun later on with those pretty ripples and monster trout behind every rock... Thanks Casey, I am THERE

Me too. Can't wait for all the info to come out. A bike and a Tenkara sound like heaven.

Sorry Pete, I missed your question, but it looks like it got sorted. Tons of great fishing on some of the west's best trout streams. I'm more of a small-to-medium stream tenkara guy, but if you wanted to, you could even fish steelhead on-route.

Am I the only one who thinks being a cartographer for the ACA sounds like pretty darned good gig?

Thanks for the update. I was wondering when these would come out. My buddy and I are planning on spending three weeks on the route this summer. I am a professor of cartography and GIS so let me know if you would like any 'error checking' when we are done. The Great Divide ACA maps were really spot on so you might not need the help as you all are doing really good work.

Aslan, we would love to hear about any mistakes you may find. While I'd like to think everything will be perfect, this is a new map, and there will be at least a few hiccups.

I will mark them up if I find anything; although, I am not sure if 3 weeks will be enough time to do the entire route. We are really looking forward to the single track sections as those type of connections are really difficult to plan when you are unfamiliar with the area. I am really glad to see ACA moving more in this direction. Thanks for all of your work on this.
