Nice trip report, Tony. Lots of detail, and thank you for posting.
I'm thinking about a winter (late Jan.) trip through the section of the CDT in the Gila NF (southbound to around Silver City).
Two questions for locals: 1. This deep in the winter, how much of a concern will snow be, and at what altitudes? Is this timing crazy? 2. How best to shuttle this from airports? Can I get close with Greyhound? Fly into ABQ and out of PHX? Or...

I finished the 2013 TD. I did the whole damn thing, excluding the 2013 detours, in good style and—as far as I know—totally in accordance with the rules.

Matt, I am not an expert or a local but have researched a lot and ridden the route so here are my 2cents.
We were between 7000-9000 feet elevation in the Gila so you'll run into snow in the winter. With La Nina conditions continuing there may not be a lot. You can check NOAA and/or the ranger stations for more exact info on snow conditions as the date gets closer. The sections from Silver City to the border and Cuba to Pie Town are generally at lower elevation and may be more clear of snow.
Greyhound could get you from ABQ or PHX to Silver City or Grants. Amtrak runs from El Paso to Demming and Lordsburg. No real public transport to the smaller towns.

Unfortunately, no bikes on Amtrak to Deming or Lordsburg (no self-loading bike racks so bikes need to be checked luggage, but no checked luggage service available at Deming or Lordsburg). Took me multiple calls and e-mails with Amtrak to rule out what would have been the easiest solution for a northbound TD start from Los Angeles. And two of the NB starters this year who tried Greyhound didn't get their bikes. So that leaves......
As miserable lower elevation NM can be in the summer, Gila is getting rather chilly now. Well, weather tolerance differs, but Silver City tends to be freezing at night (under 6000 feet) and the nice part of NM are a lot higher up.
I'll be riding in Death Valley over Christmas break.

Chris, Glad to see more mt bikes on the trail. That section around Mt Taylor is great single track and I bet even nicer in the fall. Tony
