looking at riding the oregon stampede route next week; just wanted to see if any portlanders know what the road conditions are like. i'll be riding a cross bike, so either file treads or mud tires or something in between? thanks

update: rode this route early this week over 2 1/2 days. rained every night but great road conditions. a lot of rain the previous night for the last section from tygh valley to the end, with some really soft mud/ gravel sections. i ended up using michelin mud 2 cross tires and they worked great for the conditions i had. if anyone is thinking of riding this route late fall or winter i would go with a similar tire design. great route and also a good route to bikepack. could be done in two days easily during summer but plan your stops if doing it in fall due to the shorter days.

What width are those tires?
And how did you carry your gear?

i think they are 30 or 32m; i have them mounted on black flag rims, so they widen a little. honestly a little wider tire would be ideal for this route; probably 35-40mm but i wanted something that would clear mud if and when it rained. i used my cross bike with a "traditional" bikepacking setup. revelate tangle bag, seat pack, dry bag on the front with the revelate pocket. you could use any cargo carrying style you like for this route.

Cool, thanks.
Pics are always fun, if you got 'em...
