Looking to do Highway 1 / Pacific Coast, and the Southern Tier, starting from Portland in late December. Is this a bad choice? Any trip reports?

the oregon coast in the winter is almost always wet and cold. Also up north the days are pretty short, combined with fog, rain and naroow, windy roads, you will need to bring good front a rear lights, fenders and excellent rain gear.
