Hey, Does anyone know about east/west routes in southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon? what i have in mind would take me from mountain Home Idaho, past Fields Oregon, And on west to Lakeview Oregon. I have maps that show two track along with public land (usually a good combination) , but I'm lacking alot of information about the area, mainly things like water availability, and surface conditions. Any info would be nice.

Hey KG,
I may be able to offer an assist. I'll send a PM.

Why take this discussion offline? I'd be interested to see what develops, could be of use to others as well.

I've done a couple bike trips starting in Burns Oregon and going south.  The most recent was just a few days ago and ended in Lakeview.  I intended to get to Klamath Falls, but bad weather stopped me.  Route was roughly Burns - Frenchglen - Beatys Butte - Warner Mtn - Adel - Lakeview.  5 days, maybe 250 miles, about 65% unpaved.  Many route options to do less pavement, more or less remote, more or less elevation.  GoogleEarth and some BLM maps is how I planned my route.

Besides weather (headwinds/rain), drinking water was the biggest issue for me.  I carried about 6 liters, but didn't easily find water and did some backtracking off my preferred route because of this.  Late summer/early fall might be about the driest time there.  Roads are rough, with nobody else around.  Navigation was tricky at times.  Road surfaces were varied - smooth and firm, rough rocky, a little soft and sandy.  Scenery is austere, some might say bleak.  I hope to ride in the area more.

The wind through Oregon was ceaseless! It just blew sand in my face for four days. it was maddening how it forced me to use low gear ratios. creeping by miles and miles of sage without ever seeing another soul was a real test of the zen attitude. (a test which i failed miserably. i just ended up spewing profanities into the air for hours on end.)

So, what was your route, KGB?  And did you just ride it, or you rode it shortly after the first post and are just now reporting?  Would like to hear more, if you don`t mind.

Nice country.  I`ve motor camped and driven a lot in that region, keep wanting to do more pedalled explorations, especially around Frenchglen/Steens/Malheur WR but something else always tempts me away when time is available.

Last June I had a new bike I wanted to try out, had my wife drop me off on US95 (~25 mi north of McDermitt) on our way home from Boise.  Rode mostly dirt from there to Gerlach, then mostly highway to home (northern outskirts of Reno).  Whitehorse Ranch Rd, on the top part of that route was nice enough, though nothing really special.  Crossed civiliation in Denio, then hit the really good stuff between route 140 and the asphalt north of Gerlach.  The Sheldon Antelope Refuge and Summit Lake Indian Res areas were spectacular, and skirting the west arm of the Blackrock playa was, as always, surreal.  Very dry, though- water guaranteed at Denio/Denio Jct, Summit Lake and the creek that flows into it, also at Solider Meadows Ranch for emergency (you`d have to go knock on the door and feel like an ass).  I also filled up at several springs that wouldn`t be flowing later in the summer.
