Looks like Mark answered his original question himself with a yes, even with temps below average. According to the tracker, they are getting to Warner Springs soon where average December high temp is probably around 60 - and it is in the mid-40s now. So a chilly ride - although I'd much rather be out in this weather than the more typical desert temps for most of the year! As a desert dweller, Mark probably disagrees, especially when the last few miles into Idyllwild will get close to freezing.

Mmh, no update for a couple of hours with the last point at Warner Springs. Did they bail so close to the end?

I haven't heard anything from them, but it's been sleeting all day here in Idyllwild.

Tracker is moving, after a multiple hour break in Warner Springs. I didn't think there was anything in WS to stop for (except maybe bad water at the closed gas station, although even that may no longer work). Or did something open up again?

Andrew just stopped in the shop. He pulled out at the bottom of Noble (they went on the old route for that part) and sounds like he had a pretty good trip... Coyote Canyon & Fish Creek are worth the trip if you ask me. ;-)
The other guys are near Chihuahua Valley road now, about 3:30... it's rainy, windy, and wet out there, good hypothermia conditions. Sounds like Mark is taking the ITT pretty seriously and will stay on it to the end. They're on a decent pace still, considering they're riding Fatbikes.
They have until 6:30 AM tomorrow to make the 5 day cut off!

there has always been a seasonal camp store there for PCT through hikers. food, drink, batteries, etc. not sure if they're open this time of year though.

I'd guess they were at the Lake Henshaw market, not Warner Springs.
Warner Springs is still closed as of the last time I rode through there, a few weeks ago.

I wondered why they were on my tortoise like pace?? The Fat Bikes explain it!

They did it! They're in under the 5 day cutoff late last night. Must've been a chilly ride. Can't wait to hear about it.

Mark called me about midnight last night, couldn't find a room in Idyllwild, couldn't drive out due to frozen roads and no chains. Sounded like they were planning on spending the night in the cab of his little pickup truck, hopefully something better came up. Those guys rock! Congratulations Mark and Josiah!

Way pumped to have finished the SC 400. Definitely a very demanding route, especially in inclement weather. Looking back, the diversity on the route is mind blowing. I plan on posting a trip report with pics up here on the bikepacking.net website soon.

Ended up bivying in Carter's driveway. The battery on my truck died, but I got a jump from one of his neighbors. The ice melted away by noon and we made it back down to The Desert in one piece.

We were actually holed up in one of the Warner Springs Fire Department bunkhouses. Our gear was completely soaked and they let us use their dryer and take shelter from the storm. Those guys are awesome!

Great job Mark!
Glad you completed the SC400. You even got some nice Cali desert weather (snow, rain, cold) to boot. Look forward to reading your TR.

Sounds epic! And to have to get back to the end only having to bivy (in Carter's driveway nonetheless!) makes it all the more memorable. I think Brendan should pick a month when the conditions are guaranteed to be epic, like mid February!

hey that route was a blast.
the snail like pace was mostly due to the muddy/rainy conditions... that being the case, I think the fat bikes actually helped out because there were several sections I do not think we would have been able to even ride on niners since the fat bikes were burried up in mud.
we were slaughtered on day 2 by an insane headwind which I blame for ogre quitting on us haha.
it seemed like we were rained/winded out almost every day and the only good riding conditions were at night but the nights were super creepy with cougar tracks everywhere in the mud.
overall is was a really fun route with many challenges but still almost completely rideable.
it was even fun pulling into Idy in the snow on our fat bikes... until we realized that that meant we were stuck there.
thanks to Brendan and everyone involved in creating the route and thanks to Mark for waiting on me when I fell behind constantly.
I think Mark took several good photos while he waited on me to catch up, so he should be able to come up with a pretty good trip report.
