@saubbie23, I took a look at your photos and blog and it was a great read, and informative.  Thinking of tackling the "greatest hits" section(s) of the ride next summer.  Thanks for posting.

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it. I'm going to put together a "technical" bit about the VMBT, with some info on what trails are like, good vs bad sections, food, water, etc. Keep an eye out for that!

Hey man, I was gonna attempt this in the Spring. My attempts at getting any sort of map from Chris (thought they were going to sell some) has left me empty handed. Did you bring any forest service maps or just your gps? Your blog was definitely a good read.

I had the Nat Geo maps with what I thought was the route marked on them. I tried, unsuccessfully to get maps from Chris as well. Honestly, they weren't particularly helpful, I didn't know what any of the trails would be like, and most stuff is unmarked and super overgrown, so the GPS track is the most useful. Honestly, the unknown is what made it so much fun for me. Let me know if you've got any questions, it's an incredibly tough route.

@saubbie23, man I've been following your blog, I eagerly await new posts. Your humor makes me giggle too, more than one coffee through the nose incident has occurred.
I have a question for you, do you know if the VMBT follows any of the AML routes?
The reason I ask is because my brother and I are in the BETA* collection stages of doing the VMBT. He wanted to do something profoundly memorable. I started throwing out ideas but he lives in Virginia (I used to) and wanted it to be closer to home, for some reason he thinks it'll be EASIER than the Divide or the Colorado/Arizona trails etc. Whatever. He currently lives near the northern trail head and we both went to Va Tech so I think this ride is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll pester you for more info as time goes on. Like I said, our planning is at the "yeah let's do that one!" stage.
And finally, Pal, thanks for putting forth the effort to write about your experiences and record your travels with so many pictures. It gives many people something to day dream about.
Aloha

carthief,

Thanks for the kind words, glad you are enjoying the read. I'm not sure I know what AML routes are. I am planning a more "technical info" post on the VMBT, so if there is something in particular you would like to hear about, let me know. It's quite the experience...

just ordered the maps, I've ridden out that way a bunch, but without route cues it would be just me picking my own way through. I'm from Culpeper, Va. So it's pretty easy to  get out and check portions out here and there. I will probably pick your brain here soon. Thinking of an April departure, make it a warm up for another TD run! Will download the gpx and go from there.

Oh cool. Let me know if you receive them, I would be curious to hear what information is on the maps. Honestly, I used the maps more to know if I would be on pavement versus dirt than any actual navigation. The GPS track is really what allowed me to follow the route. Most stuff out there isn't marked at all.

What maps did you order? I'm certainly interested in purchasing them as well!

Call Shenandoah Mountain Touring. From what I understand, he marks up the Nat Geo maps, but I'm not entirely sure. I was able to mark up my own maps using my best guess based on the GPS track posted on bikepacking.com. I've not really heard of many people having success actually getting copies of the maps, though, which why I'm curious.

Does any of you that have ridden these trails have GPS tracks for them? I'm looking for that kind of data to integrate into what I already have for my www.appalachianbiketrails.org website. The intent is to give us in the bikepacking community a good reference site where one can go and readily find trails to link together for putting together long rides.

I've got a GPS file from my ride, it's not particularly clean. The ones at bikepacking.com are what I followed. Let me know if you'd like my file and I can find it and send it to you.
