On August 19th, severe storms caused flash flooding and rock falls that blocked or washed away roads throughout the Canyonlands area. One of the more dramatic washouts occurred on the Mineral Bottom Road switchbacks (see photo), where signifcant portions of the road were obliterated. This damage will affect all groups traveling the White Rim Road or planning river trips that launch or take-out at Mineral Bottom.

Check out the detail views.  I wonder if hike-a-bike through there is feasible...

Even more reason to come down and ride the Coco 250 Smiley

I wonder if you could go up and around, Stefan, like you alluded to...

reminds me of the new waterline rd features that formed as a result of the recent Schultz fire in the Kachina Peaks area.  Not that fun and kinda dangerous hike a bike.

Here's another photo that shows the washout.  Bring a partner and perhaps a short rope, but it's doable on a bike.  (Though I'm sure the NPS would object.)

I see this as a blessing; finally we can enjoy the ride without the 4x4s and tour groups!!  Too bad they'll fix the road eventually.

An alternative to a dawn mission is to go down Spring Canyon, which has an old road all the way to the river.  I'm not sure if the old mining road along the river from there to Hellroaring Canyon is very established, only one way to find out (or bring an Alpacka and float down to Queen Anne bottom).  From Hellroaring to Mineral the road is useable.  You might be able to make it down Hellroaring Canyon as well, though I've never tried.

If nothing else, do the sneak hike a bike, and tell the rangers you came down Spring.

Enjoy.

I don't see the big deal, "looks" like you could go up from where the people are standing on the switchback above and just drop down the ramp on the other side. Steep and nasty but doable.

Keep in mind this is the same branch of the dark service that turned Chris P, Dave N and I away from the Schafer trail because it had a bit of snow on it.

Looks like the best time to do it.  I've done that trail on a multiday trip without 4wd support, as well as a one day ride.  Great to see the tour groups sidelined.

Can anyone recommend a 3 to 4 day trip somewhere between Prescott AZ and the White Rim as an alternative?

Get the Canyonlands map and check out the roads starting at Newspaper Rock.  I've done a three day loop to the south, starting on the trail towards the confluence, as well as a trip to Moab from there.
