I'm looking to do the Maah Daah Hey trail as a 2-day unsupported trip at the end of this month.

So far the only option I found for a shuttle is Dakota Cyclery. They want $200 for up to 4 riders (Its just me going).

Does anyone know any other less-expensive shuttle options? Anyone else out there want to do a trip like this around that time and share a shuttle, or maybe swap keys half-way?

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Hey there,

First off, great choice on the trail. If you've never been there, or aren't from around the area it will blow your mind. It's amazing that all that scenery is in the middle of the prairies.

I was on the trail back in July and I know how expensive Dakota Cyclery can be for a shuttle. That being said.. they are a great little bike shop and you should definitely support them if you get the chance. Even just stop in and check out the shop when you're in Medora. The Maah Daah Hey 100 race happened to be the weekend I was there and the race organizer said that I could catch the race shuttle back for very cheap (just something to keep in mind if you do it again in a future year).

As for alternates, try the Buffalo Gap Ranch. You could also try contacting Myers Ranch or Tescher Ranch, however, I don't believe that Myers Ranch is open/ giving shuttles anymore. Not sure about the Tescher Ranch though.

On my trip this past summer I was forced to bail on the trail and ended up riding on the US 85 highway back to the CCC campground. I was very hesitant to use this road as it is a busy road with all the oilfield traffic. The ride wasn't actually too bad as the shoulders are well maintained and the drivers were in fact very courteous to cyclists. With the low price in oil recently the oil activity may have slowed down there a bit (less traffic?). It's around 68 miles on paved road from end to end. That would definitely be doable in a day if you are unable to find a reasonably priced shuttle back and have an extra day available.
