So it's winter and I was thinking of breaking my USA virginity by flying over with my bike and riding somewhere.
the southern tier looks good.
the trans american trail looks good
the great divide looks good.
I'm ready for cold weather
I'm on a full suspension specialized stumpjumper 6fattie with ultralight gear so ready for some good uphill, fast downhill crazyness.
I'm 42!
Anyone going anywhere?

Winter in general is a pretty crappy time to tour off road in the mountains in the Rockies (at least). Any route you try will have a ton of unconsolidated snow to deal with. Days are short and the nights are very, very cold. Ski resorts are trying to open up.

Wait until Spring Bandini, and go to Alaska.

Hey, Charlie, sounds like good clean fun. I wish I could join up...

There will be tons of stuff to do next month in the southern latitudes and at lower elevations. As tempting as it might be to try to see the whole country or do one big route, I would mix it up in the southwest. Hit a chunk of the AZT and other great singletrack areas nearby like Sedona and around Phoenix and Tucson. South Mountain in Phoenix has your technical ST covered headbang

The divide from Cuba NM or Grants NM going south is good with minimal elevation/high passes.

November being the shoulder, you'll just have to see what happens and decide how much potential snow (and mud and wind) you want to deal with at higher elevations, but the SW desert will be prime, and I would have a hard time leaving that to go suffer somewhere else. Southern CA, AZ, NM, NV, UT... I would not leave those states at all in November.

Have fun planning!

We just finished our Cohutta Cat group ride last weekend and there are still people out there. Winter is a great time to ride in the Southeast. It's cold but rarely snows. Had guys on everything from rigid SS to fat bikes to FS last weekend. Check it out: http://www.bikepacking.com/routes/cohutta-cat/

I'm headed to big bend ranch state park next month for a couple of days, I don't think there's more than 4 or 5 days worth of riding there though. If you have time/money, you might consider a tour of arizona, new mexico, and west texas depending on how much time you have.
