Now planning a trip to Flagstaff for October to do the CocoNino loop. Currently have myself and a good buddy going. We welcome anyone else interested. Would love to hear from someone local about early October weather conditions around the loop. Flagstaff proper weather sounds great but how is it at the higher altitudes? Any insight is much appreciated.

Weather should be perfect the Stage Race is always around the second weekend in Oct. It's cold the second night because we camp right at the top of Mingus. I get by fine with a 32 deg bag and a Capaline layer, warm socks and riding head warmer.
We always spend the third night in the Motel and it's definitely cold in the morning.

Race too much for a beginner? Sounds like a good way to learn the route , and checkout bikepacking setups in person.

Its a good race for a beginner in 2010 I rode some with a couple from CO pretty sure it was her first bikepacking trip. They missed Williams Mountain the 3rd day and just rode the roads to Flag to finish but the did complete a loop so that was cool. That was the year that everyone who started completed a loop rather then the 60% drop rate from the first year. Tim

This would be a great one for a beginner bikepacker. It's got a bit of everything, and resupplies aren't too far apart. Just be ready for some sections of rocky, technical singletrack and a some hike-a-bike here and there. None of these techy sections are too long, but they really do slow you down after a section of dirt road! I just rode the loop for the first time last week ( http://krefs.blogspot.com/2012/07/coconino-revisited.html) and sort of enjoyed myself. The weather in October and a bit more sleeping should make it much more enjoyable.

Kip, where are you at with your planning? I was considering Oct. 12th as I'm not sure if scheduling will pan out to make the stage race. I think there's another guy here in the PHX area eyeing the same date.

Dates are open for me. What I'm trying to figure out is can I really log 50 miles/day to complete this in time to get back to work with only taking off 5 vacation days... My training program has been focused around doing a 45-50 mile road tour for 5 days. My longest ride so far is 40 miles two days in a row (80 total), without stopping for breaks. About 10-12 mph. I guess if the plan is 50 miles/day, taking 8 hours to do it isn't that bad... Thoughts?

Alright, all of those interested in this trip please chime in, I'm ready to commit. Only thing missing for me is converting to tubeless, a warmer bag and GPS. October 12th is looking like the possible start date. The goal for me would be to finish in 5 days... Approx 50 miles per day. That would be Friday through Tuesday. I would arrive in Flagstaff on Oct. 11, catch a good nights sleep and be ready to ride Friday AM. Would love to have company and other bear bait along on this trip. Who's up for this adventure?!?

I am planning to do the Oct 12 dates as a Stage Race. It will be my first multi-day bike packing trip. I am coming from Santa Monica, CA. Any newbie advice would be welcome.

Hey Carl! Looks like a decent group heading out on the 12th. Several of us our newbies as well, so we can all learn together. In fact, some are looking to keep the 4-day pace, while if needed some of us may stretch it to 5 days depending on how it's going. Either way, come prepared for an adventure!
