Hi -- I would love to do a 8-10 day trip the first week of July - but where?
I have done shorter trips by bike and have done extensive backpacking/mountaineering (so long days and backcountry camping are all good).

I ride a salsa vaya with rear panniers.
I am coming from NYC, but happy to travel (train? plane?).
Ideally this would be dirt roads and camping.

whatcha got?!

Train to Whitefish, Mt. Tour Divide route north and south, side trip into Glacier National Park. Distance north and south dependent on days available.

There are a lot of dirt rd options in the whitefish area but unless you have unlimited time i would fly here (or to GEG and then overnight train) From nyc to whitefish will probably eat up 3 days each way. You could ship your bike to Glacier cyclery and have them re assemble. once here there are some great loops - you could ride north in the salish's then pick up the GDMBR down to say seeley lake, wend your way west through the missions to Arlee and hot springs then head north back to whitefish- a lot depends on desired mileage, terrain etc.

And cost as much as a flight to Costa Rica.....

Should be plenty of stuff in the Appalachins that would fit the bill. It would be closer to you as far as travel times went.

This one was on FB https://www.facebook.com/events/1571107213108543/

Hey thanks -- unfortunately the link doesn't lead to anything, but would love to hear about suggestions in the Appalachians!

Looks like more details are at  - http://alleghenymountainsloop.blogspot.com/

This was a self supported TD style race this spring. I'm guessing the roads would be mostly OK for a Vaya. At least you'll have a springboard for some adventure closer to home. Smiley

Check these out. I am thinking of doing one of the NS PA routes this fall.

I rode from Panama City through Panama up through Costa Rica to Liberia. I would strongly recommend Panama over Costa Rica for bike touring. Costa Rica had waaay more truck traffic than Panama and in Panama in speaking with locals they said the government had input a tonne of money to join many smaller towns and villages together with new asphalt. For some sections of road, which felt really remote I surely was the first bike tourist on those freshly laid roads as the crews were still working on them. Panama trumps CR in my opinion.

I would go on the adventure cycling association website, pull up their big map with all the routes and start clicking away on routes that look interesting and are going to fit your temperature tolerances for July. Tonnes of day dreaming available on their site.

Good luck, no better feeling than touring.

Ok.... I have narrowed it down!

Either....
1. Head out to Vancouver, down to Lopez Island to see a friend and then ride Vancouver Island
2. Go to Ireland and do something there
3. Head to Durango, chill with a friend and piece together a gravel/dirt road circuit there.

thoughts?!
Anyone done anything in any of those areas?
(Durango will be the easiest to piece together...)

Nice! All of those options sounds great. I've ridden a bunch on the island so if you need some beta I can help you out there. It's beautiful and you'd get a great mix of road and gravel if that's what you're looking for. Lots to ride and beautiful places to see, plus you can surf, Tofino, if you're into that or at least want to try.

Durango is awesome too! Although I only know it riding in from the Colorado Trail, not any dirt roads, surely there are a tonne out there and those mountains...those mountains.

All seem like great options. You'll have an amazing time whichever you choose.
Let me know if you pick the island.

Adam.
