Just wondering whether any members on the forum are planning on riding the unofficial TA in 2017. The next official one is not until 2017, but I have heard that a handful of people are potentially doing it in 2017.

If anyone is planning a ride - the official route guides will be released next week on the Kennett Brothers web site.

Thanks. I'll keep my eye out for that.

Just a word of warning - expect heavy traffic on highway sections in the north end of the South Island.
Since the recent earthquake, SH1 - the main north/south route along the east coast has been closed and is unlikely to reopen for months. This means that all traffic has been rerouted along an inland route further west on SH63, SH65, and SH7. There are reports that the alternate route is crumbling under the heavy load and there have been long delays while repairs are made.
Also the north/south railroad is closed, and much of the freight it would normally have carried will now be carried by HGV on the alternate route. Freight vehicles will return to the east coast via SH7, but I suspect much tourist traffic will continue along the west coast to avoid the heavy traffic.
You are probably going to notice this most on section 42. Fortunately much of the route is off-road but you will need to take care on the highway sections. But I think all the west coast roads could be busier right down to Greymouth, where some tourist traffic may choose to return to the east coast on SH73.
When I travelled around the north of the South Island last year I noticed there was a lot more traffic than I had encountered along the west coast and further south. Not dangerous, but the constant buzz of traffic was at times quite irritating. I expect it is going to be a whole lot busier now.

I've checked the Tour Aotearoa site, and notice there have been some route amendments to avoid the increased traffic in the areas I mentioned in my previous post. The amended GPS route files are located here. Tour Aotearoa GPS Files
