D'oh!  I think he missed the turn for Hot Loop, blasting too far down Schnebly Hill Road.  Ouch, that bonus climbing has gotta hurt.

He's still making great time, but probably a little frustrated right now.

~20 minutes of climbing (if I looked at the spot track correctly).
ha ha, Blair and I ended up climbing (twice) a very similar dirtroad in Dave's TransUtah.  We almost burned Dave's TU clue sheet that night!
Thank Good that we get to track an ITTer instead of going to the rules forum.  Killer Dave, GO!

Circle K in Sedona.  The question: will he go for Don Miguel?  Could be a costly mistake if he doesn't.

Only speculation, but I bet he is going for that super sized breakfast burrito version. We did not eat it in the stage race, but for a thru-rider, it is going to be key to surviving on the sandy Lime Kiln section.

The faster he can get through Sedona/Lime before sunset, the better for him. Some hairy navigating in these sections.

We have a person on standby to offer him an orange at Circle K, we will see if he takes the bait.

  Killer Dave, GO!

Speechless on how much is in his tank givent the recent SS win at Moab. I would not be surprised if we see a *little* slow down on some of these big climbs.

Sounds like you are talking about an encounter with a guy named Don Miguel (not that there is anything wrong with that); nonetheless, we mean the burrito.

BTW, meeting a guy named Don Miguel on the trail seems like it would be "trail magic."

Very interesting.  Looks like Dave went down 179 for about 1500 feet then turned around, crossed Oak Creek onto 89 then did a short bonus pavement climb up to perhaps the New Frontier Market, then got back on course and is now on the single track to Chicken Point.  All this in about 30 minutes.  Must have known exactlly what he was buying....  Focused and moving.

Isn't it OK to accept an orange while in city limits, as long as it's offered by a magic elf without a Spot tracker?

Man, I wish that I was out there. I rode some of that area about ten years ago, and I would never have guessed that people would be doing such amazing rides now. Beautiful place. Very cool.

Looks like he went south on 179 after doing Chicken Point/Llama?

Seems unlikely he'd detour off route in Sedona twice, so the south on 179 point has got to be a route finding error.

My speculation -- he's having trouble seeing the GPS track on his shiny new Oregon GPS.  I had a bugger of a time seeing the track when I had one.  Sometimes you almost have to stop to see it.

But I could be way off -- his Oregon has supposedly improved in the viz. department.

Either way, with a backlight he should be golden through Lime Kiln now that it's dark.  Wonder if our tracks are still there to show him the way?

Go Dave!

Mingus at 11pm, after riding from Flag non-stop.  Whoo... I'll be super impressed if he pushes all the way over and keeps rolling w/o a bivy.  Hope his hike-a-bike shoes are on standby.

Nice work Dave!  He made it up Mingus in very quick time, gaining the summit around 2am.  Looks like a ~3 hour bivy on the powerline -- not bad at all.

The Split Projection Chart has him finishing just over 48 hours right now.  But Mingus and one long night are behind him.  No doubt he'll still go under 48, but 36 or less looks unlikely at this point.  36 would be ~7pm tonight, and he has 12+ hours moving time ahead of him, plus an irresistible stop in Williams.  I say look for him to finish before midnight, if he stays on the gas!!

Yeah, but I'll bet he didn't take a handlebar to the crotch early on...

He should be climbing Billy Williams shortly (jealous!!), and should make it into town before sunset.  Looks like all of Stage 4 will likely be with headlamps a blazin', unless he can make a REALLY fast transition in town.  I can't see passing up sitting down and eating a full meal, but, who knows.  For sure, everything from Sycamore Canyon in will be in the dark.  I imagine the Wing Mtn and Flag moto stuff will make good night riding.

He's in Williams, just before sunset.  Looks like he did his homework on this one -- he is at the fast food (Jack in the Box?) area, as opposed to all the restaurants on the main drag, which are sit down / order types.

Let's see how much he's got left in the tank... it took me 5:28 to ride stage 4.  That likely means a finish in the wee hours of Sunday morning, unless he's been saving it for the final push.
