I'll be your race commentator for the event. Hope to see you all bright and early for the start. Check here for pictures and updates of where the racers are and what they're likely going through later in the race.

I have to say I'm missing not racing this year a little bit but I won't be missing being out in the weather if you guys get any...which I'm sure you all will Wink

CTR racers-  Windy Peak Outdoor Lab School will be available on Sunday/Monday if  racers/families need anything.  We are located .7 miles from the Colorado Trail/Wellington Lake Road parking lot (to the left).  Water, bathroom, phones, etc.

Best of luck to all racers and hope to see you on the course.

Maybe I'll ride it next year...

Thats impressive.  I know your bike is lighter than mine but not by 10lbs.  Got your gear nailed for 2009.
You seem to be very, very serious this yr!!

I think you have to have a twitter account to see the tweets online.  Chuckyb, please advise!

From the main tracking page (which is killer by the way) if you click on my individual page, you'll see that apparently I was north of Boulder about 9 hours ago. If you look at the speed and distance data it makes zero sense. In reality I was riding around little ol' Woodland Park. I've had the SPOT on the deck for the last hour and it seems ok but this concerned me. Just a glitch?

Yes, just a glitch - had your and Cat's shared pages mixed up.  Fixed now, as you've noticed.

Alright boys and girls, the 2009 CTR is underway! The LARGE group rolled out of the Waterton Canyon trailhead this morning in a nice relaxed neutral start. They cruised up the dirt road towards the start of the singletrack, chatting, laughing and enjoying a beautiful morning. Temperatures are warm but not hot yet and they'll be happy to get through segments one and two before the real heat kicks in this year. Especially the burn area in segment 2 has no water and very little shade for quite a while, one of the few waterless stretches on the Colorado Trail in general. Luckily it's fast travel on a bike and the lack of water is mostly a non-issue. The wind was blowing but that won't affect them much unless it really picks up.

A few quick notes of things I saw. Almost everyone is carrying a SPOT though a couple people do not have them that I noticed. Most people are really starting to pack light and I didn't see quite as many racks on bikes as I have the past. Some of the favorites are continuing to pack superlight, a few without sleeping bags. Bolder than I! The Osprey Talon series is by far the most popular backpack with lots of Talon 22's and few Talon 11's and 33's.

Lots of returning racers from 2007 and 2008 and plenty of new faces as well among the 40 or more starters. I tried to get a list but it was impossible to know if I got everyone! With this year's reroute I'm curious to see where the first call in's come from. The leaders will likely blow right through Baily and push hard to Copper and/or Leadville within a short amount of time while the afternoon or evening lure of a hot meal may tempt anyone not on a mission to get over Kenosha and Georgia Pass.

I've got some pictures from the start so I'll work on getting those posted up today as well. Oh boy, it's going to be one heck of a race!

Sweet! Looks like a packed field of some strong riders this year! All of the individual racer pages are up. We're just waiting for word from the trail. I'm amazed at how many there are this year.

The racers are moving quickly. Doug Johnson seems to be pushing at the front again this year although I bet he has company of Owen, Ethan and perhaps several others. Not all the SPOTs are updating yet but hopefully as we move into the open part of segment 2 we'll get better signal. Segment 1 has quite a bit of tree cover once you get onto the singletrack.

Friends and family, remember to check the time stamp on each racers last SPOT point before panicking or worrying about where they are in the field. If their unit is not updating frequently, perhaps have them move it next time you get to talk with them. I moved mine from my "Gas Tank" behind the stem to my jersey pocket for the end of the Tour Divide and got improved reception but mostly have them make sure it isn't buried in a pack.

The leaders have already dropped to the Platte and crossed over, climbing steeply now on the other side up the switchbacks. The switchbacks dropping to the Platter are fun after quite a bit of climbing throughout segment 1. Many of them are tight though and between nerves and a loaded bike I'll bet quite a few racers are walking stuff they normally would easily ride.

Thanks for the updates Chris.  Man it's tough not being there this year.  As I sit here and watch my 3 month old coo and kick I'm reminded how worth it being here is though.  Good luck to everyone out there and safe travels.  As usual I'll be a total blue dot junkie for the next week or two.
Maybe next year. thumbsup

I rode down to the trailhead this morning and was amazed at the crowd.  The weather was perfect, so I hope everyone is off to a good start.

I put up my pictures here:

They're totally unedited so far.  Feel free to copy, edit, etc. the images as you wish.  I have higher resolution copies if there's some super secret setup you want to take a closer look at.

Best of luck to everyone out there!

Here are some pictures I got from Section 2, about 3 or so miles west of Chair Rocks.
Beautiful day for a ride! Good luck racers!
