The lead crew has popped out on 285 and is climbing to Kenosha Pass as we speak. Lots of CTR veterns up front including Jason Shelman, Ethan, Owen, Stefan, Doug Johnson with Grand Loop record holder Dave Harris also in the mix. It's hard to tell exactly who is out front yet from the time stamps but that group is very close together with even more racers chasing not far behind. Once the race turns back off the pavement at over 10k feet on Kenosha Pass, the course gets tough and will climb all the way over Georgia Pass before dropping below treeline again. Let's hope the weather is good for all the racers this afternoon as Georgia Pass is high and exposed!

Picture testing...
The lead riders are heading up and looking for this sign pretty soon. Then it's a hard right up the trail if they don't have to fill up water at the campground where there is a pump.

CTR09: Chris Neumann and Max Morris call in from Bailey where apparently several racers are. Also David Goldberg's Dad calls to wish him luck!

Look at them go! Many racers are off hwy 285, quite the difference this year from the Tarryall detour. Much quicker to Kenosha Pass. Owen and Doug appear to be nearly cresting Georgia Pass while others are settling in for a long climb to 11,800 feet. Here's a few shots of their current location.

About 3 hours left of daylight. Be interesting to see who sleeps and who doesn't!

MORE PIX!! These taken on the dry climb up from the Platte river to the "top of the world" section (where Woodland caught pix of the racers). http://picasaweb.google.com/jenyjo/080209?feat=directlink. It was awesome to see them all in one long stretch... all climbing the same hill. I'll post names under the ones I know. Feel free to post names if you need or want! EDIT: I missed 3-5 racers... and I almost ran Jeffe off the darn trail... DOH!!!! Anyway. These are posted in the order I encounted them. jj

Jefe seemed good in the morning, but I failed to grab a pic. He just kept cruisin' up the hill. Ed saw him later in the day, further down the trail. Ed says he looked great, seemed very happy. That was around noonish maybe, on the trail, a couple miles before the road (FR543) that takes you out to hwy 285. Also, Cat wasn't sure if her spot was working... but I guess it looks like it is ;-). jj

Cat spilled something (gel?) on herself and was washing off in the creek off of the CT where it crosses 543 near Meadows CG. She said she didn't want to be bear bait. She was in a great mood. And as Jen wrote, Jefe was just a couple of miles from making the turn off of CT near the wilderness onto FR543. He was having a great time. He said he was a bit tired and sluggish to start but that that was normal for him. DH had a big smile on his face. Best quote of the day from him, "I'm not in much of a hurry right now." My wonderfully noisy and ineffective v-brakes gave everyone fair warning a retro-grouch was just around the bend Everyone looked great and it was fun seeing them out there. Ed

This is Stefan's wife, Sheryl. Just chatted with him. He's taking a food break with Andrew and Scott before the final descent down to Hwy 9. He broke a spoke on Kenosha Pass, but figures he'll wait to fix it until he has a flat or some other repair. He's feeling super! The full moon is sharing the sky with one little cloud, and the temps are perfect... it's gonna be a great night!

Go Stefan! (I'm partial to race organizers who also race)
(as of SPOT point dated Sun Aug 2 20:55:06 2009 ) is ethan p. headed to the closest food resupply--or might he have *broken a spoke* too?
Edit: Ok. looks like EP is back on track.
Although the moon's a waxin', it's more likely opening day pace has top-ten racers *seeing stars* come peak 5-6 pass atop tenmile range!

Hi Stefan's wife, I just talked to Scottie. He implied that the pace was pretty aggressive and that he had not had much time to eat. Like others have said, It will be interesting in the next few hours to see who keeps riding and who stops to sleep. Trackleaders is making it very hard for me to get anything else done. Hopefully, for me, Scott goes to sleep. As long as he is moving I am not sure I will be able to stop watching. I love this tracking thing.

Thanks for the updates. The call-ins, speculations, pictures, SPOT tracker (great job Scott, it is working without you!) etc are already great this year.
I wish I could be out there riding next to these guys/gals, some pretty fun people out there on the trail. I imagine the joking, chatting, laughing is still going on even now at midnight.

It looks like several of them have negotiated the 10 mile climb, fortunately there is no weather in sight on the radar. I wonder how much snow is still on the mountain. lots of snow just a few weeks ago it doesn't look like they'll be seeing any of this stuff

Overnight calls: Doug Johnson called in from Copper Mtn. He was thinking Ethan was right behind him. Scott Morris called in from up on 10mi Range. He was with Andrew Carney.
