Marshal Bird called in from a picnic table on the route between Breckenridge and Frisco. He’s feeling better after eating. Rob Kranz called in from Copper Mtn as did Chris Neumann and Max Morris.

Lots of folks hitting the Quizno's there. Apparently I-70 is shut down??

Tegan did start but she did not want to take her SPOT unit. I'm not sure why but it's sitting here on my kitchen table.

Last night:
Tegan Davis and Mark Caminiti both called in from Copper Mtn. Dan Joseph was called in from below Kokomo Pass. And Scott Morris called in from Twin Lakes Reservoir.

This morning:
Kevin Montgomery called in from Copper Mtn. and he was battling the altitude. And Dan Joseph called back in to say he and Nick Thelen were about to ascend Kokomo!

Look at Owen go! On a mission! He's now riding near Sargents Mesa, a section that is not very fast. It's going to stay slow until he drops back to highway 114 and Lujan Creek. It looks like Doug (go Doug!) has launched a chase and is crossing the previous hwy and headed up to the Crest trail. This climb is *tough* and the last part is a straight pusher above 11k feet. Behind Doug it looks like Jason and Ethan may be a group of two and also Stefan and Jefe. No doubt they're all feeling the pressure of remoteness. There are a few highway bailouts and some signs of life on the Crest trail for a few miles, but after that, they are very unlikely to see anyone besides other racers and the occasional thru hiker. The section they've been riding past the mt.princeton hot springs is pretty darn rocky and trending uphill. Doug and I pushed up a bunch of it in the predawn hours last year.

Behind the leaders it looks like quite a few riders are in or headed very quickly to Buena Vista. The prospect of an easy hot meal will be pushing them along down the easy highway and dirt roads. Out of BV, Cottonwood pass road climbs up the canyon fairly steeply in spots to where they rejoin the CT. After rejoining they CT they'll make their way to the Mt.Princeton Hot Springs where another tiny general store and restaurant await. After leaving here they enter the black hole for 2-3 nights out probably. There are no services on or even very near the route and bailouts are few. Their packs will be heavy with food I'm sure!

Happy Birthday to Dave Nice, albeit belated. Dave Nice actually just called in. He's in Breckenridge. He endo'd and hurt his wrist pretty bad. He's going to have it checked out before proceeding. Andrew Carney called in from Buena Vista and Chris Neumann called in from Leadville after a cold night!

Thanks for all the pictures and insights into the various sections of the course.  The riders passed all the parts I've ridden in the first day or less Smiley

Thanks, too, for the call ins.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Nice.  I hope he's feeling ok and stays true to Rule 1.

Best of luck to everyone out there!

Scott Morris called in from Buena Vista. He’s still having some issues with the GPS Track as he’s seeing some misinformation. Rob Kranz called in from Leadville as well.

after listening to scott's descriptions of the GPS track inconsistencies i have to wonder *by whom* --or rather by *what* conveyance the track was created. some sections of CT by bear creek north of twin lakes *are* confusing in spots (i remember being lost briefly at times in `07, based simply on nebulous trail data book mileages) but the hwy 24 earlier turn (over a gate), across the arkansas river n. of BV suggests a thru-hiker (and not a biker) is probably to credit for the track. c`est la vie of dedicated GPS use, i suppose, where bad data can be worse than no data at all.

Stefan is in much better spirits today! I was actually able to meet him in Buena Vista last night around 9:30 PM as our son and I made our way to the grandparent's in SW Colorado. He needed a "reset button" after yesterday, stocking up on food at the City Market and actually getting a hotel for a shower and a solid 4.5 hours of sleep. He stayed true to race rules and wouldn't even accept a Mtn. Dew from us.  thumbsup He's about to descend to Hwy 50 and hopes to make it over the Continental Divide before any thunderstorms start.

Friends of Todd Johnson here...

It's been fun tracking the ride.  So glad you able to push through!  Leo is practicing on his tricycle in hopes of being your partner one day.

Pulled into the moment by SPOT: I was feeling for Owen a few minutes ago. He just crested one of the worst hike-a-bikes on the route. Sargents mesa and the ensuing ridge running puts you on the ropes, then the final steep pushers before the ripping descent to Lujan creek are just insult to injury. It's about to get hot for him too. Not much water in there either. He's a little under half way to Silverton, maybe?

looks like shelman made up some ground on doug and the crest trail. its his home turf so i am sure that was nice for him.
i can't believe the gap owen has. he must be flying. curious to see if he can keep that pace.

I'm loving the updates from people who have actually ridden the route, cause I haven't (except waterton to georgia)
and I'm getting a much better idea of what the riders are going through than by just tracking on the map.
Thanks all, and keep it coming!
