Nice but….I sort of wish I would not have read your write up.  Brings back all my AZT memories, makes me wish the AZT was in my 2010 plans

Oh, and is sounds like you got the endurance bug in a bad way now, soon it will be more AZT, then some CTR, GL, GD etc etc……….you are doomed

haha yup I'm addicted.  Training for CTR starts now, I feel like I can't fake my way through that one like I did during the 300

Sunday, I plan to ride the course from Box Canyon Road north for a couple hours, then back to the car.

Had a great weekend on the AZ Trail, I ended up riding on Sunday from Parker Canyon Lake to Patagonia and made only two wrong turns. Read all about it here:

I waited too long to order from Epic or Carousel bag artists, back order 10 weeks for both! Does anyone have a medium escape pod style under the saddle bag I could borrow or buy for the AZTrail 300? I really don't want to go with a rack. Trail karma will be good for you.

Marycycle, I should have an Epic saddle bag you could borrow.  It's very experienced at this sort of thing and should take good care of your gear.  PM me and we'll figure out how to arrange something.

SPOT Tracker Info

The AZT 300 (and full) will once again be tracked by www.trackleaders.com.  Trackleaders will also be providing SPOT units, free of charge, to any racer that wants one.  You provide the batteries (2 AA Lithium).  

If you want to borrow a SPOT and are >90% "in" for the race, please send me an email (smorris@topofusion.com) with your name and emergency contact info (name and phone number).  Thanks.


A tiny conditions update:

I rode the 300 route around the Santa Ritas yesterday.  Things are in great shape -- rocky, brutal, overgrown, demoralizing at times.  Same old, you know.   

The spigot at Madera Canyon was on, but it can be flakey, so I would not depend on it.  The creek just before the spigot has plenty of water to filter and is very unlikely to dry up by race day -- it was ~8 inches deep at the road crossing and there is still plenty of snow melting up high.  A couple other creeks before that are still running, too.

Tons of poppies along the sides of Salero Road and surrounding mountains.  We'll see if they last until race day, but perhaps new ones will spring up higher up if not.

How's the snow up on Lemmon? Are we doing Bugs?

Bugs is not in either the cues or latest GPX, as of now.  I would rather add the densely forested stuff up higher, first.  But snow might be the limiting factor there.

I still think Oracle Ridge will be clear by the time we get there, but I haven't heard any reports on it yet.  Based on what I saw in the Santa Ritas it might be fine right now (I observed no snow on 7200' north facing slopes).

Brad Mattingly finished the AZT 300 (*) on Tuesday!!!

He had this to say:  "Wow that's a burly, isolated ride."

Good job Brad!

(*) Brad did head up into the Catalinas, but skipped some of the pavement and did not ride Oracle Ridge.

Oracle Ridge is great.  I can't wait to ride...push...drag...and freeze while on it again!  I'm happy to see it might be around for one more year

Looks like I jumped the gun on Brad before getting the full story.  I edited the post above a bit -- he did end up taking a ride and skipped Oracle Ridge as well.  Still congrats on a finishing a big ride.
