Amazing... only a brief stop just before Cody trail for Jefe.
5am and he is well into the Antelope Peak segment. Look for a first ever daylight win and finish! It won't be easy with mid eighties in the forecast, but he'll get it done.
Go Jefe!

Rob is out of the race.
Bummer. Corey Moser is also out due to tire/sidewall failure. He bailed into Green Valley. And Matt Gindlesparger is out with a hip injury. Rob, do you know where Tim is? When was the last time you saw him? His SPOT isn't tracking.

Man, Jefe is FLYING! I think he's several hours ahead of my pace from last year, and that's including heading a little off route into Oracle. Inspiring riding!

Haven't seen or hear from Tim since the start, he told me that he was sticking to a 50mile/day pace. I bailed at the Lakes Rd. While on HWY83 I ran into Eric Nelson who was also out of the race. I caught a ride back into town with him and his uncle.

Thanks Rob. Was wondering about Eric as well.
I just heard from Tim. He is leaving Tucson right now, doing well and feeling good. I am going to look into why his SPOT isn't working.

Yep, I have him about five hours ahead of record pace and going strong. That should be enough time to finish around sunset if all continues to go well. There is still a lot to be done between here and there, and the heat is already beating down on him I would say. The Box and Orphan Boy are going to be cookers, but he will have the advantage of daylight, which should help a lot on the final singletrack. Brad Kee and Matt Fusco are the next racers, and remember that they are doing the full event, meaning they rode extra snow miles at the start and are continuing on past Superior. Impressive.

5 hours looks ahead looks just about right. I remember sitting along the Gila last year and swapping out to clear lenses in my glasses because of the coming darkness, and he's there right about now.

Hey everyone, I'm out. Bailed at Saguaro Natl Park East. Legs are thrashed, mind is mush. Enjoyed riding some with Lee and Tim on Day 1 and camp out with Action Jackson and Cory on Night 1. But thanks again to Scott for the epic experience! I'll be back. With lighter stuff.

It's Sunday afternoon and more than half the field has scratched. Kudos to those still riding.
Jefe is out of 'the box', still on pace to finish around sunset tonight. I can only imagine the level of suffering that the Orphan Boy climb is going to dish out, at this hour, this angle of sun and given all he has been through. He did not sleep at all the first night, and caught maybe 2 hours sleep on Oracle Ridge last night. This has been an incredible run for him.
Adam Lederer seems to have bailed back to Tucson from the Catalina Highway. Perhaps a mechanical issue? He did detour towards Broadway Bikes / Performance Bikes early in the race.
Brad and Matt Fusco should be starting Oracle Ridge soon, with plenty of daylight to make a dent into it.
Todd Johnson from Idaho is making quick work of the loooong climb up Mt Lemmon.
My good friend and Tucson area local Lee Blackwell follows, soon to wrap up the 'prison camp' section of trail, then it's onto the big pavement climb.
Action Jackson and Tim M. are somewhere in the Redington area.
Mary just posted that she is scratching from Tucson. Great ride Mary; just making it to Tucson is an accomplishment and a ride few have completed.
Ian from the UK is bringing up the rear, and settling in for a 'long haul' pace. He's going for the full AZT and started the race with a pair of trekking poles in his pack -- presumably for the Grand Canyon hike! He's thinking ahead.

I wanted to mention that Mark Camiti is out there somewhere, without a SPOT (he chose not to carry one). I haven't heard of any sightings from anyone. He is doing the full AZT.
Also, come to find out Todd Tanner has a long history of DH podiums (XC too). No wonder he was flat out kicking my butt on all the technical descents out there (on sighting it, no less). Never ridden with a more confident bikepacking descender.
Todd was carrying a SPOT, but he upgraded to tracking service right before the race, and his points were not showing up on his share page. So they were not available to trackleaders software, unfortunately. There was nothing we could do about it.
Todd actually led almost all of the Canelo Hills. He and I then yo-yo'd through Madera Canyon, finally joining forces after dark. He kept riding when I fell to pieces near I-10, where I decided to take a nap in the culvert (that was the only place in the world that didn't feel arctic and sticky wet). Jefe and I then trailed him until we found him sitting down at Molino Basin, with no GPS or cue sheets. He rode back to Tucson to try to fix his GPS (trying different batteries) but that did not work. I am pretty sure he was going to continue bikepacking towards Phoenix, likely on dirt roads. At the time it sounded a little nutty, but then I read that he rode from home (200 miles) to the 2009 24 hour world championships, raced with bikepacking gear, took 9th, then rode home. Nice.

Ever since I finished the first AZT 300 five years ago I have dreamed of someone finishing the route before sunset on Sunday. Jefe just did it.
Super impressed, well done. A new record by at least five hours.
