Looks like he did it.  Wow.  Still need to get an official finish time from the bossman, but I'm pretty sure we have a new record.  Amazing.

Got it by 20 minutes +/- 3 Wink

A most entertaining day of stalking ghosts was had by us and him.  Now we see what's left.  Train wreck or smooth sailing northward?  If he stops now he will have had an awesome ride.  If he rolls it to Utah he will have a legendary ride!

Matt Lee he's coming for you next Wink

Last point suggests he'll make it... but... we need another point here.  It's close.
Holy fricken Moley!  2d9h13m by his last point.  But, +/-10 minutes of SPOT uncertainty.  It doesn't get any closer than that.  Especially for chasing a virtual rabbit...

Jefe, way to set the bar!  And Kurt, over or under it by a minute - either way one helluva start to the whole enchilada!

Let's hope not, he needs to focus on races with some singletrack so he can start to take out your records, DaveH.  thumbsup

Talked to Kurt for a second before his phone cut out...

"Man, I'm hungry..."

"I'm missing my aero bars...  arms are just tired.... from all the abuse."

I didn't get his official time, and he thought he just missed it (wasn't sure Jefe's time).  I told him I was pretty sure he did it, but it's still a little uncertain.

1 - those birds that sleep on the trail. Are there no predators round here?! You can get within inches and I had to brake for a few on the second days singletrack, a ton more last night into Payson, and they fly about 10 metres away and settle down for the night again right on the trail! Crazy...
Ian

The Crazy bird is the Common Poorwill a type of Nighthawk, they are actually hunting bugs along the road you just keep catching them by surprise. If you get a chance to watch one they will jump up and catch bugs.

Well, I got a call from Mark @ 12:00 a.m. mtn. time Sunday, he was getting ready to camp out on the trail.  He is heading up toward the "rim" and I think he said Mormon lake but I honestly don't remember the exact location.  He mentioned that it was pretty steep climb and that it was excrutiatingly slow pace, he is very determined to get to his destination and since I haven't heard from him today I imagine that he is in an area without any ph service.  He said it was about 37 or 40 degrees and not bad temp wise...I wish he liked the spot device but he's kinda a neanderthal when it comes to technology! I was glad he at least got the GPS this year....Layla

Thanks for the update Layla.  I offered him a SPOT!  Smiley

Kurt's official finish was 5:20p.  That's 2:08:45.  I think Jefe's finish was 6:10pm (Jefe?), meaning 2:09:02.  So we have a new AZT 300 record.

Very impressive, Kurt.

Ha, you guys are hilarious!  That was a very entertaining series of posts.  I'm waiting for my laundry to finish in the overpriced BW at Gold Camp.  I just had my first actual meal in 3 days, and it's almost time for seconds.  Things so far have gone about as well as could be hoped for, though going for the 300 record was never my intention.  But apparently I'm stronger than last year, and a little extra sleep does the body good, and last night as I was getting into my sleeping bag, I decided to get up 30 minutes earlier than I would have otherwise and see if I was close to Jefe's time at the Gila (though I didn't know exactly what that time was).

I felt good all day, and from the Gila I decided to push the pace.  That last part was eerily similar to last year, knowing that Stefan was somewhere just behind me.  I baked on those climbs, and ran out of water except for two bottles I grabbed in the Box that I didn't want to stop to treat.  With 2 miles to go, the clock passed what I thought Jefe's time was, so I backed off just a bit after I had been pushing the envelope all the way down the descent.  It turns out I just eeked in under Jefe's time!

I sat and waited for my water to be drinkable, ate the last of my food, and then pedaled north to where I now sit.  My ankle is hurting a fair bit after this afternoon's effort, so hopefully the mellow riding up to Payson tomorrow will help that out.  We'll see how many matches I have left in these legs.  I'm going to sleep a few extra hours tonight...I think they earned it.

Ha ha, entertaining text change Smiley  One of those records is easy pickins.  A couple of them not so much.  But, that's what they are there for - motivational points of references.  If it helps Kurt (or anyone else) go faster on a route I'm all for it, so long as I can watch via trackleaders Wink

F%&k Yeah Kurt!!! Damn fast, Yeah my finishing time was 6:10PM. I mean it's hard to believe, yet not so hard to believe. Impressive, very impressive, nice work, really pushing the envelope here, amazing. Funny I was freaking out a bit about my hard earned record going down so soon, but then I went for a ride yesterday and now I am stoked to see the human machine getting even faster. Keep on rocking everyone whose out there. Jefe

Our minds, our human bodies and incredible bicycles, moving across the crust of our earth, spinning in the universe, we are sharing this moment in history together. Now with the Spot technology we have entered an era never seen before in the human experience.

Keep the calls coming Mark. What a difference between the Mormon Lake call-in and the Flagstaff call-in. You can tell he is loving life and heading to the GC South Rim!

Looks like the boys will have some killer weather for the run through the pines down to the ditch.  Busting out into the sage north of Flag is some damn fine riding.

Mark sounds like he is in the groove and high spirits.  Thinking about a sweet spot to camp...80F and sunny on the rim?  That's livin large.

Agreed to both Dave's.  Man I wish I were out there right now.  Weather looks primo for both Mark and Kurt to finish with.  I think Ian is maybe only going to Flagstaff?  Who knows, maybe he'll decide to continue putting the 'real world' off and keep on rolling.  The ride from Flag to the Canyon is indeed a sweet one, and not all that strenuous (relative to the rest of the AZT).

We're going to see Kurt's speed drop significantly today.  The Highline trail is the longest stretch of slow riding (slash hiking) on the whole route.  Maybe not quite as slow as Oracle ridge, per mile, but Highline is ~17 miles, where Oracle is only 5 or 6 (for the slow stuff).

He's making great time, and I would say is just on pace to finish in his goal of 7.5 days.   He will need to keep the hammer down to do it, for sure.
