 thumbsup

~Five less miles on 285 will be a welcome change.  I don't think the "shoulder" starts until further up, though.

YES!   hello2

I was hoping for a full moon (nothing beats moonlight and mountains), but I'll just have to upgrade my headlamp.

Gotta go train some more now...

hey I jsut went over kenosha/285 and there is still gonna be some narrow margin riding from Shawnee to the top of the pass, but it will be less of it. Funny after last year I swore I'd never want to do that again, but it will be monday not sunday, last year it was super scary IMO. Way too many close calls, and that was just for me, seems like a risky spot for who knows how many riders, but I guess taryall detour is too much mileage? No matter I will be there, wonder how many will be on the roll call will be this year? Peace Jefe

You betcha, but I'm slow as hell so you're going to have to be patient.  Who knows I might have to pull a ramstrong in order to finish.

Looks like it's going to be a tight race...

... for last place!

My goal is pretty basic: finish, and live to ride another day!

Hey how did I get pulled into this?  icon_scratch Maybe the shit should be flying towards the quitters.  Maybe you couldn't really consider my attempt totally legitimate as I didnt do 22 and 23 but several issues would have made going up a bad decision.  If you get to the top of Slumgullion maybe you will get to decide yourself.  We were clearly told that if we got there and thing were not just so we could take the 2008 route and still be given an official finish.  Its cool with me if that turned out to not be the case.  For me, it just became a personal battle to get to Durango in line with the rules and be able to live with myself without feeling like I had put a year into training for something and then just bailing like so many of my fellow starters.  I admit it.  At 44 years old I overestimated my fitness and greatly underestimated the scope and challenge of this race.    Toby and Jonesy ,Wait til you have finished before you start judging my race.  It's a LONGGGGGGGGG way to Durango tough guys. By the way, your ass thread is a little wierd.

Huh? I'm not judging your race--or anyone's for that matter. Before your post, I couldn't have even recalled whether you rode the CTR! I don't think that this thread is about you (I certainly don't see anyone mentioning your name), but rather about a couple of newbies sharing some excitement and begging for some advice.

I hope to finish the CTR, because it's obviously damn hard. If it were easy, I wouldn't be spending so much time preparing--and I probably wouldn't take up the challenge at all. A "tough guy"? Well, I hope that I'm tough enough physically and mentally to make it to the finish, which is true for everybody who starts, right?

On the topic of judging, anyone who gets out there and gives it their best shot is alright in my book--whether they win, finish, detour, or fail. Your committed effort certainly earns my respect, although your misplaced tirade does make me wonder if you've had a few too many beers tonight!

TG,  I was surprised to see my result from last year pulled into Jonesy comments "may have to pull a ramstrong to finish" and your subsequent response.  I realize my methods were not the norm but I did finish and to that end I feel that derogatory comments would be reserved for someone who had actually finished ahead of me.  Sorry if I got a little defensive but I'm proud of my tenacity and was bummed to see myself used as an illustration of how not to ride.  Maybe we could get together and train as we are both in FC.

Sorry tom, no offense was meant. I was referencing your stopping in salida to regroup/recover and still going on to finish instead of just dropping out.  My comment was that I hope to finish even if it means that I have to lay low for a couple of days to recover.  Congrats on your finish, I was following your tracker the entire way.

I'm about to gain some unpopularity, but this really is a black and white issue...

We were clearly told that if we got there and thing were not just so we could take the 2008 route and still be given an official finish.

I'm not sure who told Tom this, but I did not.  Rule 1 clearly states "the entire CTR route", and in the info section, "Any shortcutting or deviating from the course, intentional or not, will result in a DNF"

However, when people like Tom (or Dan or Nick or Ethan in 2009, or Owen & Jason in 2008) have poured their heart & soul into the race, getting to Durango is such a huge obstacle that a DNF seems overly harsh.  I do not wish to diminish these guys' achievements in that manner, so instead, I have listed these people separately as finishers, but with a course deviation.  I intend to continue this practice in 2010.

Hi Stephan,

Thanks for the post.  I might have have had selective hearing that morning.  "Clearly" was a bit of a stretch.  I was pretty stressed.  I appreciate your extending an unofficial finish.  It is an awesome task and to have gotten a DNF would have been heartbreaking.  Honestly by the top of Slumgullion, I was feeling pretty unofficial actually!   I am looking forward to being able to ride a better pace this year and get on that official finisher list!  Any guess how many starters this year??

However, I intend to do the race in reverse (Durango to Denver). Is this permissible by CTR race standards? Anyone else?
