Yep pretty sure it's all new for him hopefully he'll have enough food to carry him through today and part of tomorrow. Then he can look for more single track to ride while he waits for us to get there.

On the other hand the weather is looking iffy. And we are down to 2 riders going up from Tucson. We might even be down for a short ride on the final passage so Max could come on down and meet us Friday night.

He should be back in cell range once he gets to Jacob Lake.

He's in Jacob lake... no singletrack this year.  He said they were claiming only a few inches of snow on the north rim, but I'll bet it is more than that.  Or as Tim speculated, he may just need food.  It's hard to carry too much when crossing the canyon and trying to keep weight to a bare minimum.

Talked to Max he was getting dinner at the Lodge at Jacob Lake. We didn't get a chance to talk about the snow levels mostly getting things straight for the pick up. He'll be finishing up tomorrow and then waiting at the finish line for us to come and get him. One hell of a ride from the sounds of things.

After crawling out of the canyon, I was very happy to have some highway miles to ride the following morning, and even more happy that I could eat two breakfasts in Jacob Lake since all I had left for food when I awoke was a bag of horrendous mustard-flavored pretzels. Max seems to have planned out the food far better than I did from the sounds of it, though. He's put in quite an impressive ride...can't wait to hear more about it. Hopefully the dinners at Jacob Lake are just as good as the breakfasts!

Not sure what Max had ordered but their Grilled Cranberry Chicken is great.

Like Scott said that part of it's always going to be tough. On the first tour when I rode around the canyon I had the Bob trailer and lots of food and I got to ride it all. The year I ended up with some crumbs of snack mix left over fortunately there was a bunch of snow so I had an excuse.

At some point someone is going to have to resupply at Jacob Lake and go back out to ride all of the single track.

First he's got to get across that last series of drainages between him and that awesome descent. They kicked my butt, but all the switchbacks through the flower-filled meadow more than made up for it! Hopefully Max gets rewarded with those same wildflowers. He'll be grinning for hours if he does! He'll probably be grinning for hours even if he doesn't given his adventure!

Max,

You are a stud.  Good job.  Its been very windy for days in Flagstaff and very cold at night.  What a huge killer ride you did.  Awesome.  Enjoy some R and R with hot showers and meals when you get back to civilization.

Way to go!

Max has joined a very exclusive club- I think he is #6 in the full meal deal fraternity. Congrats to you. I know how hard it is to crawl out of the ditch and and finish this beast. The AZT is one tough ride.

Now you need to return to CTR for some revenge and to complete the singletrack double play- AZT and CTR in the same year!

Huge congrats Max!  There was never a doubt in my mind you would finish.

For those interested I have written the story of my adventure on the AZT.  Less of a trip report and more of a short story (OK maybe not so short), I would suggest grabbing a coffee or beer before committing the half hour to read it.  I would have posted it sooner, but I was missing what seems to be a mandatory piece of bikepack racing...a blog. Now up to speed on the whole blog scene, I think I'm good to go.  Enjoy.
