Dude 4 hours of stationary training 3 days a week would absolutely require me to be committed to a psych ward! I'm gonna start telling stories about you!

Yep, that's either impressive or scary. Or perhaps both: Impressively scary? Well, at least he'll be ready for the long boring stretches! I admire the discipline though--there's no way that I could put in those kinds of hours in my basement. It's going to pay off for him this summer!

I'd go postal after more than 20 minutes. I just can't do indoor exercise.

Nope, I am not THAT EPIC, I meant in total of around 4 hours a week on a stationary. 4 hours at a time would kill me, not my legs. I have a 10 mile a day commute and on the weekends depending on weather it usually 2 hours of stationary on Saturday and Sunday. Once again 4 hours at a time is pretty doable but a book couldnt keep me occupied for that long.

LOL - 4 hours total is still awesome! My bike commute is a combination of car/bike and the bike portion still ends up being 54 miles. So at this point in the season I'm only biking 1-2 days a week. Each leg takes basically 2 hours for me. I kept thinking about what it would feel like mentally to combine both legs on an indoor trainer. I had all these crazy images of you being math phd and doing math in your head while training. Or maybe just the opposite. Maybe you were into WWF wrestling and drank beer and yelled at the tv while riding. Either way Trailrider11, you were a hero! Stories were going to be told! I might just start sleuthing aorund the roadie forums searching for this guy. You know he's out there. 12 hours a week on an indoor trainer. Nuttier then a can of Planters Peanuts. And crushing the competition at races!

Haha, well Ill try to accomplish this feat just once. Besides Our trails here were still muddy as of today and its just not rideable, plus rain is in the forecast for ten days straight. Looks like some road and stationary again..... . Anyway, Im sure this phenomenon is out there!

First and foremost, for those of you with standard fitting shoes, your feet are going to really, really swell. Just FYI. Gregclimbs mentioned that his current shoes don't have room for bags in them. Trust me when I tell you that a full size bigger than normal in shoes may not be enough for some people. Swelling doesn't effect everyone the same, but most people underestimate how much your feet will swell.
Secondly, I just broke my Clavicle. Had a plate and 9 screws installed on Tuesday--pretty bummed. Not going to do the race for sure--planning on doing a 10 day ride starting August 8th instead. I can't even really train for at least 4 weeks according to the doc, but I will get on a stationary bike before then. Just kind of bummed about it. Mountainbiking accident. Still can't wait to do the ride (all things going well). Only hurdle I have is if I can get the time off work since I have taken a week for the recovery up to this point...

The CTR is looking attractive, mostly because it starts so close to my doorstep and I want to visit Durango sometime this year.
Is this race a, "just show up, ready" kind of depart? I won't be in the peak of my fitness, but I'd like to give this a good go, if I'm feeling up to it.

It is an unsupported race, no prizes, just bragging rights. You will also need a SPOT if you plan to participate (as well as signing up so people know to include your SPOT). But yeah, it is basically a show up and ride theme. There is a defined route/detours that, if you claim you "raced", you have to stick to. That said, it is also an amazing ride, which is how I will be treating it...

Well, considering only one rider has completed the TD/CTR double, and that person happens to be Matt Lee, I would say you have very little chance of completing both in the same calendar year. Is it impossible to do well in both? No, but competing at the front in TD is hard enough, and that effort will make CTR a hike-a-bike hell IMO.
I have heard that this year some riders are considering both races, like Ethan Passant. We will see what happens, but TD always seems to kill anyones drive to show up for CTR. YMMV.

Yeah, plenty available, price may be a little higher and will depend on if you want a SPOT1 or SPOT2. We'll have both available. Details to follow. Super stoked to track the CTR this year.

Hi CTR people! I've been gearing up for the race for the past few weeks, but I just now discovered this thread! Lots of great stoke and info, thanks! I'm way behind in my planning – it seems like you guys have had your gear dialed since February, and I'm just now building the bike (new Salsa El Mariachi singlespeed, it's gonna be sweet) and trying to figure out what to bring. I just bought a nice new rain jacket - from what I understand from reading trip reports from previous years it sounds like I can expect to get rained on a few times. Does anyone want to meet up for an evening ride and share some tips on how to survive the CTR? I'm in Boulder. See you on the trail!! Dan

I'm always up to arranging meet-ups in Fort Collins. Been fun to share ideas at the Rio over a beer/marg with other CTR riders in the past. If you, or anyone else, wants to get together just send me a PM.

Hey everyone!
Been following the site and the CTR stuff for a while and finally getting around to posting myself. Barring any issues with when I start teaching this fall, I'm planning on giving the CTR a first go this summer.
Dan, I'm also in Boulder and would love to meet up for some rides. Afraid I can't offer any tips but I'm more or less in the same boat: good fitness but still getting the last bits of gear and planning to dial stuff in this summer (if the trails ever melt out...). Shoot me a PM if you want to get out. I'm a teacher so after this week, I'm free until mid Aug!
Cheers anthony

Water Treatment - Filter or UV Light? I can't decide to go with a filter, like the 7.5 oz MSR HyperFlow, or the Steripen Adventure that's half the weight. Either way, I'd also carry a few tablets as backup. The gravity feed filters seem attractive, multitask while it filters for you, but they are heavier. HyperFlow - doesn't filter down to the virus level, but is that an issue for the CTR? Being able to pump directly into the bladder would be nice... Steripen - lightweight, even with a spare set of batteries, seems the big attraction. however, seems time consuming to push the button and stir... and then you also need to carry an extra pint or qt/L transfer bottle... I assume cloudy water shouldn't be much of an issue on the CTR either... -Barry

GPS? Anybody out there willing to share some beta on suitable GPS units? I have an older Foretrex 201 unit, but I don't think that's going to work for the CTR. From what I've heard the CTR requires a lot of waypoints. Sounds like a hassle to have to load the trail into segments. Worth it to buy unit with large internal memory or go the multiple memory card path? Having ridden very little of the CTR, I think a GPS unit is almost mandatory for my needs... REI has the Garmin Map62S on sale for $280, which seems like a decent GPS... but the ~9oz weight is a turn-off... -Barry ---- Moved to Q&A "Vista HCx vs Edge 605 or other" thread... -B

Barry, try searching the forums on this site. You'll find long threads on both topics.
