I'm working on some ideas for covering my ankles too

Last year I wore Gore tex tennis shoes and used OR low cut gaiters.  Worked well.  This year I have clipless shoes and intend to bring those gaiters again... 8 oz/pair, but worth it for me.

Going in reverse this year, I have been working on the calories needed out of Silverton to Buena Vista.  I have a number of 16,000 and it weighs around 12 pounds.  I had a great no-backpack strategy going until I tried to find a way to carry all that food!  It fit on the bike, but whoa heavy (60 pounds with 100 oz water).  I guess a small backpack will have to do...

Leaving in 8 days!!  Looking forward to seeing racers out there towards the end of my journey, if not at Indian Creek campground Sunday night.

btw my friend rode up Fooses and down Monarch Crest last weekend.  He said there was a little snow and mud, but wasn't a problem.

Any guesses on how many of us at the start in Indian Creek Aug 1?  I'm a newbie, and following this thread the last few months, seems like there are a LOT of us noobs.

I'm guessing minimum 100 riders.  I hope Scott M has enough SPOTS !!!

I'm to the point of burnout on gear planning.  After obsessing about it all for months, now I'm like "meh."  Rain gear, lights, bivy and bag, and a few small party favors for when the going gets rough.  Like Spicoli said ... "all I need is a tasty trail and a cool buzz."

Far less than 100.  37 signed up for Spot tracking so far.  I hoping less than 50, and if the # starts to approach 75, we'll have to do some crowd mitigation...  The Indian Creek TH is not conducive to a start with so many people.

I would absolutely love it if it's far less than 100.  I'd rather be off the back of 40 than 90.

Sorry, I must have missed it, where/how do I sign up for a SPOT?  Thanks Stefan.

Stefan - apologizes if you already answered this, but I've got a SPOT question.

I own a SPOT, but I let my service plan expire. In order to be tracked during the CTR, do I have to sign-up for a year-long contract again?

Thanks,

Forest

Yes. You'll need to pay for the full tracking service if you want your Spot to operate--and it'll need to be operational in order to send location data to Trackleaders.

Or you can rent a Spot from Trackleaders, which already has the tracking service!

Whittling down BCS waypoints to the essential.

I'm going through the same process of trimming the BCS waypoints.

Besides 1) Water, 2) Ridge Top, and 3) Campsite waypoints, are there any other types of waypoints that people found are useful to have?

Thanks for any advice!

I left them all in, aside from the ones in wilderness areas.

According to Forest Service website, there is no water:  http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72BTn0AjAwgAykeaxcN4jhYG_h4eYX5hPgYwefy6w0H24dcPNgEHcDTQ9_PIz03VL8iNMMgycVQEADoWIdk!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfME80MEkxVkFCOTBFMktTNUJIMjAwMDAwMDA!/?ss=110204&navid=110000000000000&pnavid=null&cid=FSE_003741&recid=33524&ttype=recarea&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&pname=Grand+Mesa%2C+Uncompahgre+and+Gunnison+National+Fore+-+Slumgullion+Campground

I would call the Ranger District to see if the pump will be unlocked by August.  Last year there was a hand pump for potable water next to one of the campsites on the East side of the Forest Service road.  I used it as a good resupply.  I'm actually surprised it is currently showing no water.

Since I very unfortunately  sad2 won't be able to do the CTR this year I am going to help a couple other guys out getting to the start and seeing all you bad A$# riders start.  If anyone needs to park a car in a safe neighborhood (I'm about 4 miles from Waterton Canyon) and catch a ride to the start I will have room for about 2 more riders to get them to the start.  Also plenty of room to crash on the couch or floor the night before if needed.  Just send me a personal message and we can coordinate.

Good luck gdillon! I agree with your food assessment departing from Silverton - load it up!

Gdillion,  12 pounds for 16000 calories seems pretty heavy icon_scratch(unless that includes the 100 oz h2o). 16,000 cals @ averaging 175 cals/oz( my goal) is only 5.7 pounds + packaging. As much as it cost to cut grams off of gear weight I hate to negate that by carrying to much low cal food, but if your happy with the 12, go for it.      Tony V
