No personal experience (yet) with the CTR, but my friends Doug Johnson (2nd 2009) and Jon Csakany both have done it on hardtails. I'll likely be out there on a steel 29er come August, and I'm guessing you and I won't be alone. I personally just like the simplicity of a hardtail when I'm miles from anywhere. Plus I've been on SS for a few years, which kind of takes FS out of the picture.

Simplicity is exactly why I am going with HT 29er this year. Hopefully less to worry about than with a full sus.

I think it just comes down to personal taste. Every year folks complete the trail on both types of bikes. If you love your hard tail for long days on the trail, rock it and have fun!
Personally I'm not a hard tail fan and scratch my head when I see them on Colorado trails, but that's just my bias because I love the downhill. Just makes me feel like a kid. I also like the reduced wear and tear on my body too!
I think if you really sit down and list the pros versus cons you find personal biases will make you lean towards one or the other, and not hard scientific facts. So in the words of some famous beer guys from Colorado, "whatever your folly is, follow it"

Today, around 2:00pm Hwy 50
Ha, when you reach this crossing you will wish, at least for a few minutes that you were riding a FS with large brake rotors

As my VERY hard-tail '94 Cannondale ground my butt into hamburger , I spent more than just a few minutes thinking about a new FS bike! Thanks for the photo Marshall. Motivating, in a cold and desolate sort of way!

Pushing your bike up the next section makes you glad you have a light weight hard tail. Foose's creek is a sum bitch.

Yeah, during the last bit up to the pass, I briefly considered disassembling my bike and gear and dragging everything up one piece at a time.

I think it would rock to ride this section in reverse! Have fun all you Durango-to-Denver riders.

Toby, your picture was stuck in head on my commute... and then I saw a maverick pass me... then I was back on the CT again. Thanks man, what a beauty!

So, is there a start date for this yet? I might still be in the US around that time of the year and if I still feel like biking after attempting TDR, why not give it a try? Just looking into possibilities.

One of the awesome things about the CT is that you can pretty much just point your camera anywhere, hit the shutter, and get a decent photo. Assuming of course, that you remember to wipe the morning's dirt and rain off of the lens. Keeping your finger out of the frame helps too--which proved to be difficult more times that I'd like to admit during the CTR!

Taking advantage of snow days here in the Plains. August 1 will be here soon, won't it.

Ha, that photo looks a lot like my table did a month ago. Make sure you check the CT route in the Gazetteer - mine (a couple years old) was wrong in a few places. Specifically I remember just east of Breck, the old Hope Pass route still marked near BV/Salida, and the old CT route down the valley near Stony Pass.

Bike is ready to go way ahead of schedule! Can't wait to get out there and sleep on the ground. Thinking about going somewhere drier than Colorado in March...
