Do you think City Market closes at midnight or more like 10?
I just assume everything will close 5 minutes before I get there. It makes planning a lot easier.

Dan Joseph, Ryan Feild, and Myself (eturk) are all staring from Durango. We leave Friday night from Front Range Co. I will try to get a few to officially post the "Durango Start". It is awfully tempting to start on Sunday rather than Monday Aug 1. But so far, we are committing to the official race start in reverse. I guess it depends on if Stephen will still let us do the call in's, leaderboard, etc., on Sunday, but I still think its more interesting to see dots collide.
Why reverse? 1. Because its entierly different and not popular by demand (that said it can be more dangerous for newbies) 2. To get the harder stuff over with while in theory strong (if not exactly "trail hardened"). I think I can drop gear (weight) as I get to next point: 3. More services if needed (when needed) at second half 4 ) most importantly, because I live in Gilpin and might as well bike towards rather than away.
Wish us luck and see you the other way. eturk

Hey y'all. There are 3 of us leaving Denver on July 20 after work to ride the CT west to east. Rental cars are pretty much out, but we've secured a uhaul to get us down there.
Thought I'd throw it out there to anyone wanting/able to make a road trip and help out 3 guys and their bikes. We'll pay the same as the uhaul ($200) plus gas to take us down there in your vehicle.
Melt snow, melt!

I'm considering not carrying a Spot this year. Last year I had one that didn't work very well and I felt like I was lugging around a piece of garbage. Instead I'm thinking of bringing my cell phone and doing call ins. Are there required call in locations for folks not carrying a Spot? Or is a cell phone not ok for doing call ins, only a public phone? Also, if carrying a phone I'm assuming it is legit to call people while I'm out there as long as I'm not arranging support? I'm mainly wanting to be in touch with my parents in hopes of coordinating a timely rescue from Junction Creek. Thanks.

Spots are not required for the CTR. Nor are call-ins. That said, I think that it's risky not to carry one. Cell phone coverage is extremely limited on the route, and you'll feel awfully alone out there if you crash hard and need a rescue--and you don't have a Spot. Plus, Trackleaders does make the race more fun for everyone! Maybe your Spot didn't work that well because of where it was placed? I've had some trouble what that, but I've finally found the "ideal" spot: on top of my shoulder, in a small bag attached to my pack strap.

OK, to bring up a completely old topic... I finally found the guy that rides for hours on an indoor trainer. He's multi-time RAAM winner John Howard. Here's the quote that just made me chuckle: “When I can sit on my trainer staring at a blank white wall for five hours straight, I’m just about ready for RAAM.” I knew he was out there... it just took some time to find him

I didn't think that dropping gear was in the spirit of this race... unless you're not doing an officially unofficial reverse version... -B Dan ..., Ryan ..., and Myself ... are all staring from Durango. ... I will try to get a few to officially post the "Durango Start". ... I think I can drop gear (weight) as I get to next point: ... Wish us luck and see you the other way. eturk

ah come now - I mean dropping gear at the post office (from tent to just tarp, for example).

Another example - eating all the carry food and anticipating more stop food (more services in reverse on the second half), another way to weight down. I am sure your not planning on carrying all your food are you?

Hmmm... I guess this is going to polarize the discussion, but it seems like pretzel logic here. Picking up a package that's at the post office isn't the same as using the post office as a conduit to make the load carried lighter. IMHO, mailing heavy gear home is just a cheaper [but inconvenient with those USPS business hours] way than just jettisoning gear along the trail. Actually, if you come back to retrieve your dropped gear, then you would save on shipping too. With your logic, I guess one could also do bike swaps at post offices along the way, which would also meet the literal description of only using mail drops. Nothing like a freshly serviced and clean bike optimized for each section. Am I the only one that interprets the rule this way? Have people mailed home gear in the past? Another example - eating all the carry food and anticipating more stop food (more services in reverse on the second half), another way to weight down. I am sure your not planning on carrying all your food are you?

Breaking the law?
A: Duh! No trespassing. No littering. No riding in Wilderness Areas. Etc. This also means no ditching or stashing of any gear to pick up later. That is the same as littering as far as the CTR is concerned. If you need to get rid of something, find a dumpster or a post office. Dropping stuff along the way is the same as littering, and if you intend to pick it up later that is not fair to other riders who don't have the capability to do the same. Everyone can use the post office for whatever they want.

@BarryWind: Please don't mis-interpret me - I never advocated littering. Can't see why it would be against course rules to toss un-needed gear, as long as you do it responsibly. As far as post office drops for more gear - that may be a good question for the race rules. As far as if going in reverse is official or unofficial, I really don't care either way, but I am pretty sure Stephen made it clear in an earlier post that is acceptable.

Looks like I opened Pandora's Box... I don't think the originators of this event meant for post offices to be used as a way to optimize gear choice and selection to gain an advantage. Other than using the post office to resupplying with food and/or wear 'n' tear items, isn't this a use what you started with [and carry to the end] race? Run whatcha brung? My mention of dropping gear was a way of paralleling how I feel about using the post office to swap/drop gear to gain an advantage. I would not personally drop, stash, grab or have gear held to gain an advantage in this OFFICIAL event. But if a person isn't doing this as an official race, then they are free to do as they please. Once we get this hammered out, we can then start on world peace...

I'll back away form the keyboard and await wisdom from the forefathers of this event, but the topic of this thread is "...CTR Planning." Some people might be making important plans that utilize, or don't, the lowly post office... -B Rather than debate this point, may I suggest that you simply e-mail Stefan?

The rule is very clear an easy to interpret:
"No pre-arranged support, with the exception of maildrops to a post office and only a post office." "If you need to get rid of something, find a dumpster or a post office."
If you want to ship yourself a Clif bar or a shiny new bike or a stack of porns, go ahead. Last year I shipped gear to BV that I didn't need the first 200 miles. Racers have shipped excess gear home from Silverton that they didn't need for the last 70 miles.
