I can't believe I waited until two days ago to buy the Trail Data Book.  That thing is bad ass.  Awesome backup to the GPS.

Scrambling to get work out of the way before Monday am.  These people just don't understand when I have to tell them "I don't know" when I'll be back ... 8 days?  10?  14?     Man, I can't wait.

Hi Toby. Yes, got the Data Book. It gererally gives the impression that there is plenty of water. I've found the Sargents Mesa section and Tank 7 creek. On Coney's not sure what CG is - is this page 51, water just after leaving highway 149?

I was just there last weekend - not sure where spring creek campground is, but before you climb spring creek pass (last bit of 149 pavement, short climb) there is a creek crossing.  There is also a creek a few miles into segment 22, but it is inundated with sheep right now - not really recommended!  Once you pass the creek at the base of spring creek pass, the next good water is about a mile past Coney summit.  That's a good haul, 4+ hours between good water sections.

There is some water on the trail in a marshy area before leaving the trees for good, but it looked like it was about to dry up.

I am a full bundle of nerves...

Equally excited and scared out of my gourd for the monday start.

My custom frame?  Didn't get finished in time.

My custom lights?  They just arrived (and testing burn time as we speak):

I was nervous about dragging my ayups (and all three batteries) and using them up without any chance of reloading them.  These by TrailLED run on AAs so I can reload at gas stations and groceries (and he sent me two battery holders).

I have shed my list down to the bare minimum (for me), continually removing things from the list...

With the mantra "if I need it and don't have it, I will only be without it for a few days"

Now to find the last thing I need.... A finding nemo Dory sticker for the handlebars...

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming....

Steve, Dave's description is better than mine--and more current!

Thanks Dave and Toby - excellent info, much appreciated.
Glad to help. I went back and looked for the original sources of info that I used to prepare for my ride last year, and I realized that I actually used the Colorado Trail Guidebook a lot more than the Data Book. If you don't already have it, there definitely still time to hit a bookstore for a copy. It's too heavy to take on the race, but it's got excellent tips, etc.

Someone, possibly posting here, has been training with a fully loaded bike at Marshall Mesa in Boulder (who also evidently likes the Southern Sun, too).  Are you on here?  That is my neighborhood, too--love to share a beer at the Sun when your race is over.  I am definitely out--the clavicle surgery just didn't leave me enough time to recover this year (among other things) and I wish you ALL a ton of good fortune and good weather!  (best of luck on the Weather thing :-))

I was loaded and riding out on Marshall Mesa this morning.  And of course, I love Southern Sun, 2 FYIs are all I need to get me to my happy place.  Not sure if I'm the guy saw or not though, I have a red dry bag on my bars.  Either way, I'm up for beers after the race!

Too bad about the clavicle, but at least you were able to get the surgery.  I broke mine a number of years ago when I didn't have any health insurance and I opted for not having the surgery.  Since I broke it in two places it healed crooked and rubs funny on my pack strap.

Good luck Dan! Have fun out there!

Anyone want to give me some last minute tips with uploading Topofusion topo maps to my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx?

OK, I know this is last minute. I'm sitting in the REI Starbucks in Denver trying to upload the tracks, way points, and topo map to my GPS.

I've successfully loaded the tracks and way points. I'm not sure what the best settings are for uploading the relevant topo maps for the route. I've never done this before.

I know there are some limits on how detailed the map can be, so can anyone tell me what map settings worked well for them? Ideally, I'd like to squeeze as much map detail into the upload as I can.

First question - can I split the maps into multiple sections and upload them separately or I'm I only allowed to drag a rectangle around the entire route and upload one map?

Second question  - given the answer to the first question, what are the best settings to use in the "Export Current View" window? For example what settings do people use for the following:
Presets
Tileset Preference
Draw order (checked y/n)
Tiled KMZ drop down setting
UTM grid setting

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Forest,

I don't load any topo maps on my Vista HCx. Just the relevant Bear Creek Survey waypoints and Stefan's CTR track. I posted my process on my blog a few months ago:
http://tobygadd.blogspot.com/2011/03/colorado-trail-race-navigation.html

Just follow the track. Don't try to make it a route or anything. If you buy the Colorado Trail Databook, the Bear Creek waypoints align very nicely, so you'll have all the info that you need!

Cheers,
Toby

Toby, thanks for the quick reply.

I just read your blog post. I'm in total agreement about the tracks and waypoints.

I would like to use my GPS to its full capability though and upload some maps too.

Anyone else uploading maps from Topofusion?

I don't think Topofusion can upload basemaps to the Vista.

Try this instead: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/197 (use the software that came with the GPS)

Make sure you figure out how to turn the extra basemap on and off in the GPS menu because it can be more distracting than helpful at times.

TopoFusion can upload topo maps to some GPS's, but not to the Vista.  These guys gave some solid advice (thanks) -- gpsfiledepot and most importantly the track from the CTR site.

One more last minute Garmin eTrex Vista HCx - when I try to load the CTR500 split 500 file onto the device, it truncates the tracks at 20, but Stefan's file is split into 25 tracks. Is there a workaround here?

I just downloaded and checked the file called "CTR 2010 split 500" on the main CTR site and it only contains 20 tracks, so it should work.

Are you certain that your track memory on the HCx was empty before attempting your upload?
