How many people ride with maps VS a GPS. Also if I have a GPS failure (which I have had before) can I make it off of cues only? I almost never ride with a map and hoping on not starting now, so I would like to carry the cues as back up. Can I buy the CUES only or do I have to buy the map set to get the them?

There's a nice gentleman by the name of Lloyd Payne who lives in Lorsdburg. His number is 575-590-0316.

THANKS

The maps aren't all that useful as maps.  They show the route and maddeningly leave off a lot of road and terrain detail right next to the route that would be useful, particularly if you get turned around.  What they do provide is general elevation profiles, lists of services, etc. in addition to the cues.  I like them, but lots of folks ride without them.  ACA used to give the cue files away for free, but it sounds like they are for sale now???  I haven't checked recently.  Some folks buy the maps and just copy off profile and services info and then leave the maps at home.  Lots of ways to do it.

One word of warning - unless the QC has improved, you will want to compare the cue files with the maps as the cue file they gave out last year had a couple of significant gaps as compared to the map-printed cues.

Have some stats and projections.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ag4epxJKyBqcdHBMWmo5azlaTWZPTDdLZGpzaTZ2M2c&hl=en
I based this on 2008, 2009, and 2010 Grand Departs, sorry no ITTD.
2008 scratch state is based on where they called in from.
2009 and 2010 are based on the split chart, the last split time; unless it was something I personally remembered.  I didn't feel like digging through all the call ins to see exactly where someone scratched(2008 was hard enough).

Excel truncates so there are some rounding errors, but it's serviceable.
Let me know if you see some errors.

Nice job!  Very insightful!  Thank you for pulling this together.  It might be interesting to add snowfall to this.  I am betting this summer is going to be super more muddy with the run off after these one in a decade snows from this winter.

Well, I will ask the question....what is the impact of this in June?

I tried looking through some of those pages and doing some more research, but I felt like one needed a degree in meteorology to make any sense of it?

Here're some pretty easy-to-use visuals:

If the predictions hold true, New Mexico could be hotter than usual with a higher possibility of wildfire.

Also, look to what's happening Nov 2010 - April 2011. Currently, snowpack across the northern rockies is way above normal. Come June, this will mean more/deeper snowy passes and higher stream levels, unless we have an unusually warm April/May.

Casey, yea, I have stopped watching the snow fall maps along the divide and started looking for the lightest possible raft for the creek / river crossings.

These things are light and will fit in your epic/revelate handlebar harness! I've seen some video of Eric from Revelate, he has been able to do a bikepackrafting trip. Pretty sick....

How did you choose what day to make your return flight on?

I've got my target finish day in mind so I guess I might end up doing touristy stuff in Tucson for a few days before my scheduled flight Smiley

It's tough trying to balance flight times versus airlines versus baggage charges when flying with a bike.

I too have a target date... but who knows how close I can hit it... I'm planning on flying a different carrier for my return leg (southwest airlines) - so right now I have no return trip booked. Looking at southwest's fees for changing a flight ($0), i may buy a ticket now and call and change the dates when I know better - say near the WY/CO border and pay the difference in fare price. Hopefully that far out the fare price will be small(ish).

I'm looking at Air Canada to get there and Frontier to get back, mainly to avoid baggage fees from the big US carriers.
