On a related note, I met Mcmurve at NAHBS and had a great time talking TDR.
I now see Vance is going to be tough in the intra-TD Beard-growing classification. Not sure if he can beat Kurt R., but we'll see...

I guess a little slower than to change a chain since I have to take the wheel most of the way off, and unbolt the rear triangle.

The other night I went to a slideshow at our cycle club on Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP's, some lovely shots and looking forward to visiting the area this summer.  It was also an opportunity to catch up with two other TD's toeing the line in June, don't expect to see much of them once the flag drops...

Two questions:

(1) Is riding from Calgary to Banff a reasonable option?  Two of us are travelling together early enough and we could cycle to Banff rather than take the shuttle.  Not sure if it is a busy dual-carriageway or if a quiet road route exists, if its pleasant it would be a nice leg loosener.

(2) Do the Canada maps have this new route on it?

http://blog.adventurecycling.org/2011/03/help-keep-wild-in-canadas-flathead.html

My mate received our maps last week but I thought I read that the Canada maps were not being updated.  I can keep my eyes open for the addenda but wondering how useful the map will be over the 114 miles in the article.  (I will be taking a gps as well but I like maps and they don't fail!)

Hi Blackhound,

If you sift back through the thread there is a rider from Calgary who was talking about riding to Banff.  Hopefully he's still following the thread.

The section mentioned in the article is the main route from Sparwood through the Flathead Valley to the highway just short of the border.  What is now designated the Fernie Alternate used to be the main route.

Bob

P.S. I agree on the maps, I just wish the ACA would put a UTM grid on the border so I could use the map with a GPS.

Man, with TD rookies Dejay (SS National champ) & Jake pushing Aidan, there could be some impressive SS finish times. Paging Dave Harris (also SS National champ)?

Bruce, not yet. I am not inclined to give thumbs-up on cues for the Gila section (the only reroute you, as a NoBo, are concerned with) until they've been vetted by aca, anyway (April).

Regarding your water info for the Sapillo spigot (on Gila reroute), i think your source might have been slightly misinformed. What i was told is that it was not producing the flow they had hoped, and they were going to revisit the well later in the spring. Perhaps low flow = contaminated water, but not sure. The water alternative (which will be much more of an issue for SoBos) is to go 1.5 mi SW on Hwy 35 to a store/lodge to resupply. For SoBos this will be a strategic scenario as it is ~2.5hrs to water in Pinos Altos and the off-route re-up will cost / save 45min of riding.

BobM, thanks for quick response.  Will look back through the thread when I get a bit of time.  I have still to actually see the Canada map, not had chance to catch up with my mate for various reasons so will get to look at it soon enough and it may all make sense.

The new 2011 Section 1 map will not have a reroute between Wise River and Lima.

Need to take more time on this one this summer. So, there will not be a change until the next printing come out (2013).

Thanks, Casey!

Sounds like that's an area that needs some pretty thorough scouting before making a change, particularly for touring riders.
