AW to Banff? I have had a look on the map and its all uphill  BangHead  Wink

So what would the benifits be? I gess you could get NM done early before the heat sets in and then miss some / all of the snow on the higher passes furhter north. Are there any issues with turning nice long downhills into drags up hill or does it even out? I only ask as MBR (UK MTB Magazine) manages to publish amazing routes around the UK and every single one is nicer ridden in reverse! (fire road descent then a singletrack climb? WTF?)

The missing (some) of the heat in NM is appealing to this pale limey  headbang

Avoiding the heat down south and the mud up north is the primary reason for me.

But in no particular order there is also:

It's never been done within the context of TD.
I won't be competing for the win so best for me not to take up space at the grand depart given Parks Canada's concerns.
I'd rather end in Banff, which a pretty darn nice place to spend a few days recovering from the race.
If I succeed my name will be on the same list as Fixie Dave's in the record book, underneath of course.

I am in! I have some unfinished biz in MT, WY, ID, CO, and NM.

My pop just got himself a Rands crank forward bike. It dose pretty good off road. I could see one completing the TD someday.

Cheers- Jim

  SSPunk,
If you do TD are you doing it on your Blackbuck?
I'm waiting on my bags for my singlespeed Blackbuck from Eric at Revelate Designs. I have two bottle mounts on the fork (Salsa Fargo fork) so I went with the full frame bag. I've had the Blackbuck set up for bikepacking for several months now and it's working out very well. Currently running a 55 inch gear and I'm planning on staying there.
I'd like to hear more about running south to north. If several things fall into place I might do TD in 2011 or tour around Colorado for a month or two. I'm a possible for 2011 at this point. Dave, what are your reasons for this direction?

AW elevation 4662 ft... Banff 4800ft I dont care for shuttle rides  Wink

I think in the right year it could be done faster due to heat, mud, snow...also not quite as many services down south so easier for me to get into the groove without stopping in motels ect....

Yep, Blackbuck all the way as the Xtracycle would suck! I too am waiting on a frame bag from Eric to complete the set (already have a seat and bar bag form him) and I was looking at the Salsa forks to get some weight off my back / volume out of the frame bag. Currently the kit is tipping the scales at 21lbs (ex food and water) but with a change of clothes for town/motel.

I still have a long way to go before I commit to the 2011 race but having put in a big millage week (90km last Sunday, 216km Friday plus commuting 10km a day) and not suffered with ass / knee issues I am feeling pretty good about it. Lots of stuff still needs testing but I have a week off in Aug to my self when I can get some multi-day trips in.

moving from a fully 26er to a steel 29er HT for this... damn scary to commit to such an endeavor! while being giddy with anticipation.

I plan to ride in 2011 - had assumed N>S but if there was a group going S>N then may be interested in that route. Noted that elevation is not that different between the two locations. Had assumed it would be easier riding Southwards but a cooler start and warmer finish may be beneficial to a slower rider like myself.

Managed over 200 miles on the road last weekend which was fine, but I am in generally poor condition this year.  Will have 7 months to train full time through a UK winter though.
