Hey Blackhound and anyone else who may be interested. I'm going to be riding from Calgary, I was tentatively thinking wednesday the 8th. If you arrive in Calgary on tuesday the 7th, I can take you on great warmup ride. We'd start around 8am with breakfast and coffee at Cadence cafe, a cycling meet up spot in NW Calgary. Then I have inner city single track that leads to great back country roads, through Cochrane, the Ghost river valley, finishing off with 30 km of single track into the park. About 130km. It would be an honor to share some our best roads and a cool trail. It's the second half of this ride but in reverse.
Epic Devils Gap loop.

Hey everybody,
I created a web application I think you might find useful for race planning - http://eatsleepridegreatdivide.com.  It is an interactive elevation profile of the Great Divide route.  It shows precise total ascent, total descent, and net elevation gain for any section of the route.

I slow-toured the route last year and hope for you all the best of luck (and weather).  It's a noble goal.

Dave

Edit 1: added the option to specify which direction you're travelling for easy route reversal.
Edit 2: added centering on selected sections

Sweeeet mashup!  I love it.   thumbsup

What JS graphing library did you use?  Ready for feature requests?  Wink
-- Total ascent and descent change for the selected section
-- A checkbox under "popular searches" that toggles a northbound selection (but defaults to southbound)
-- Have the map center over a new selection from the left

and a really hard one (I can maybe help with):
-- color code for 3 types of terrain (dirt road, pavement, or trail)

Awesome!

I'm glad you guys like it.  I've added the options to reverse the start/end markers and auto-zoom on selected sections.

I'll pass on adding the road type indicators.  That information is available on the ACA maps and, although an interesting programming challenge, in the end I think it's irrelevant race-wise.  Dirt roads will be washboarded, impassible with mud, or snow-covered for miles and pavement can be broken to the point of being worse than washboard.  Create a race strategy on such small and fickle details and the wrenches in the gears will only hurt more, mentally and physically.

Yes, great job!

Love the Indiana Pass section mile 1951 to 1972.

Thanks a ton David!

Any chance that this will be updated once the 'Official 2011 TD' track is available on the Topofusion site?

Thanks for the mash up Dave. I just spent 2 hours and reminiscing about my ride last year.

Hello everyone! I am looking for a lightweight alarm. Maybe on a watch but it needs to be simple to use and loud. Thanks, Jeff

This is not particularly light (3.7 ounces) or small (4 3/4 x 3 x 1/2 inches) but it is super easy to set and has a thermometer built in, plus when you press the screen back the backlight goes on - really easy to do when you want to check in the middle of the night.

Funny, that's been on my list of things too. I don't normally ride wearing a watch and my only digital watch with an alarm is no where near loud enough to wake me.

Jeff I've found that being from the east coast helps with being awake at the pre dawn hours for the first few days on the TD(and the few days before while in Banff).
After a few days I got in tune with the environment and I was generally awake before my watch went off.
Getting out the the sleeping bag on the otherhand was a little harder.

Will you be carrying a cell phone?  When traveling, that's my alarm clock.

I bought a pay as you go phone when I rode the route last Summer with the intention of using it as camera, alarm, text sender and receiver and phone (in that order). As an alarm though it was useless as it needed to be on and have an active signal to know the time.... So check your phone alarm operates when it is powered off and no active signal before you rely on it!

I will not have my phone powered up most of the time to spare the battery. I can wake up fine, I just sleep better if I know an alarm is watching the clock for me.

a comment, with all the multitudes racing this year, you would think that this thread would be buzzin' . Do most not know it exists? I cannot imagine getting all the info I needed without the help of this site.
