Hi, I'm already in Banff and am not in the possibility to change my GPS tracks. Just read here about the new one. Can anybody please explain in detail what all the snow detours are for this year. I hope they are all alternatives from on the official maps otherwise i'll be forced to follow the 'what was the official route until a day ago'. And this version is final?

Here's a link to the official page on Tourdivide.org. It looks like you can piece together the cues from all the info here.

An email just went out with the updated details:
http://tourdivide.org/TD11_detours

I'd actually mapped personal detours which match these pretty closely. Now the very big decision, snowshoes or not as these detours skip the passes until well down into MT, and then skip heading over Flagg Ranch instead heading down the East of the Tetons.

@AT, in case you haven't seen this:  http://tourdivide.org/TD11_detours    I would go to Monod Sports and get them to hook you up, eh.  129 Banff Avenue.  Offer them a beer or two, eh?

On the topic of fun with one's GPS.  Has anyone gotten http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/mp_mttopo.html topos working on their GPS yet?  Only the NM topo will show on my Dakota 20.  Been working on this for 3 days.  Any other suggestions for 24k-resolution topos for the TD route?  TIA

I'm think the kiddie snow shoes are the way to go now, easy to ditch after making it through the elk pass craziness.

Do any of the N Montana folks know if Fitzsimmons Road along the US Flathead reroute is free of snow? The modeled snowpack through there is pretty dang deep!

In case everyone hasn't noticed there are some new GPX files on topofusion:  http://www.topofusion.com/divide/gps.php

Maybe someone will provide some guidance as to what route is the TD one for this year.

Bingo--any and all major snow problems/issues resolved with one little ol GPS file-great job Scott (and anyone else involved)

--good luck everyone

Thinking of a change of directions. For those going South - North how are you getting to Antelope Wells? Looks easy to fly to El Paso but how to get from there to the start? Gila Wilderness Shuttle who is mentioned on the ACA web site are no longer operating and was just given a silly quote of $500 from one shuttle company.

Hey Matthew or Scott,

Do you have the route cues in miles for the Lincoln to Butte, MT Detour (Section 1-B)?  Thanks!

As I'm reading the changes, the Gold Dust trail is now OPTIONAL for this year?

Another question about the ID/WY reroute. Does anybody have any idea what services are available along the way? I did some research and can find the populations of the different cities but my guesses at what the services that are available based upon the population alone are pretty weak...

Driggs should be good for whatever you need, then you've got Jackson before you link back up with the original route.

Kurt
I live along whitefish lake and will head up that way to check things out. Have been in Afghanistan for a couple of weeks so I am not totally up to speed. On the 18th I did ride toward upper whitefish lake from my house and was stopped by constant snow at about the rd up to werner peak (about 10 miles shy of U.W. lake). The alternate route is pretty and has a nice climb , but much easier and shorter than the part cut out. I may see if I can head up to Galton pass as well to see what i find. i did the original scouting on that section and have some notes and photos from 2008 to compare.

I don't know for sure but i would also expect a long slog on Richmond peak as the snowtels down that way are still super high.

some numbers:
galton pass
trail creek pass
pass on 2011 alternate from stryker
red meadow pass

comparing to 2008 -snowiest divide race in these parts
Stahl pk (6030 ft in between  Galton and Trail creek passes) currently 57 inches of water (depth 131)   2008-34 inches  normal-27 inches
grave creek (4300 ft on way up to trail creek pass) currently 7 (17 depth)  inches of water  2008- 0    ave 0
Both moss peak and North fork jocko are at 220+ percent of normal so richmond will have more snow than normal but should not be too horrible as the low elevation snowtels down that way are at 0

New gps track uploaded. One less thing to do! Thanks to all that helped with the recon and the planning of these alternates.

In case anyone is suffering through my particular flavor of GPS pain right now---i.e., you can't get the miscjunk.org topo maps working---here is the hard fought solution:  you MUST disable Garmin's own NT map.  Voila, you can now see topo maps!  Why this is the case only an advanced alien species could explain....

Russ, the maps have a precedence on which shows, the Garmin NT always comes first as you've just discovered.
