Probably just not seeing it, but is there someplace that says how far the distance is between waypoints on the leaderboard? Thanks.

Kurt is 50 minutes up on his pace last year, which he thought was astonishingly fast then. The south wind has no doubt been a small part of that -- I experienced similar winds a few weeks ago on that same section.
Still, it's impressive to see so many riders making serious headway on Day 1. This is an incredible group of riders. So many characters, so many stories and so much individuality. I feel like I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about so many of the riders I was lucky enough to chat with, get to know, or catch up with.
Kurt Sandiforth is lighting it up, he appears to be right on the heels of our three leaders. Kurt has toured the entire AZT twice, and has extensive touring experience in general. What I didn't know is that he has killer fitness too.
Night one is huge. So far, no threat of incoming weather -- it's gorgeous out. Not even a hint of a storm on the western horizon. The forecasts are still calling for it, and timing does not look favorable for the leaders. We'll see how it goes.
Alright, I better catch some Z's.

Got a call from Erick Lord, he broke his rear shifter around mile 86 and can't shift gears. Looks like he will have to make a big detour into Tucson this morning. This will cost him a lot of time, but hopefully a shop will have a new shifter for him and he will be able to keep going.
He definitely wasn't planning on this being a single speed race.!

Yeah, Jill stayed on the AZT when she was supposed to turn off to detour around the Rincon Wilderness @X9 Road. It looks like she also accidentally stayed with the AZT signs to drop into Cienega Creek, when the course/GPS takes you over the car bridge. Must be having issues following her GPS.
Radar doesn't look good for most of the pack, indeed. Rincon Valley seems to be pretty well socked in. I woke up to light rain at my house, and it sure isn't warm out.
Lemmon doesn't appear to be getting hammered, and the weather models seem to have backed off on this system somewhat. Even a light rain/snow mix and the guaranteed winds up there, though, will make it a very cold climb for KR/AG. Max has dropped off their pace, but is still rocking it. Iditarod hero Pete Basigner has now moved into third after a slow start. He isn't likely to slow down due to the weather. Kurt S. in fourth.
Awesome to see so many riders past I-10 already.

Just noticed the 4 pack of Raybum, Big Dave Wilson, Erick Lord and Justin from PA, at La Sevilla Picnic area, under a big green radar blob, and no doubt under the ramadas there.
I can just imagine Steve Wilkinson, from the UK, saying "Rain, what rain?" as he rode by them. Steve had to cobble together his bike with new parts after realizing the race started Friday, not Saturday!

Looking at the raceflow plot -- horizontal lines indicate stopping. Big ones = sleeping.
Max, Kurt S, Jeff Butler and Pawel all got some rest at La Sevilla where there is at least shelter. You can see that Max was with Kurt and Aaron when they reached that point, but he opted to bivy -- due to being tired, or due to incoming rain?
Pete, Brad Kee and Matt Fusco did not stop. It's interesting to see Kurt S and Max's lines as much steeper than Pete's this morning -- they are riding faster and catching up.
Max missed the X9 turn just like Jill! D'oh.

I was just looking in-depth to try and decipher who 'slept' and who didn't. Not a lot of green tent icons showing up. This is where the tactics get interesting for me ... does 4 hrs of sleep translate to going faster during waking hours compared to non-stoppers? |

Currently 22 degrees and snowing at Summerhaven (top of the Lemmon climb). Kurt is ~2 hours ahead of his own pace from last year. He crashed and hurt his knee last year on the descent, so let's hope it goes better for him.
Can't imagine climbing Lemmon in those conditions. Looking for a new point from Aaron, to confirm he is still with Kurt.

Yep, those are LB waypoints. You can turn them on/off in "map layers". |
