For Scott M - Tuesday 5pm-ish local time is the time to beat in order to garner FKT status.  No time to dilly-dally at the 'haven ... his spot hasn't updated for over an hour, so maybe he's out on Oracle Ridge by now (?)

J-Bake, say it isn't so!! Last update shows him riding down the Catalina Hwy back towards Tucson.

My right knee is done. I tried pedaling with my left leg, walking, pill popping, but it only continued to get worse.

I still want to keep going.  I still feel strong.

My theory is that I ride left front forward and all my angry descending on my hardtail eventually did my right knee in.

I'm looking at Scott M making some good time, and looks like Marshall's gonna have a visitor come upon him from behind sometime this afternoon/evening.

And Kurt S - on the Superstition Hwy?  Is there a resupply out that way?  Seems odd, hope everything's okay.

... rootin' for all the 750 riders !!

Yep Kurt S is heading into Apache Junction there's motels, bike shops, plus.

If he's emulating Kurt's 750 strategy he'll get a room.

J Bake good effort sorry to hear you had to cash it in.

Lots of people still putting one foot in front of the other out there. Has to be some kind of record for most users on Oracle Ridge in a long time.

Tim, thank you, and Fritz, for your continuing work on Oracle Ridge! I followed your tracks in the snow down, marveling at how I didn't take a single branch to the face. The trail is worlds different from 3 or 4 years ago...now it at least looks like a trail in most places.

Kurt S is hunting for a bike shop it looks like. There's not another one on route until Flag unless something opened up in Payson, so that's a smart move if he's got anything at all wrong.

Anyone heard anything from Fred W? He's out there sans SPOT.

Marshall is providing a pretty good carrot for Scott....wonder what time he will catch him?

Scott made a detour to Oracle to the Circle K. I think we will see him start again in a few minutes and then sleep near Antelope Peak.

It looks like Steve W is staying at a Budget Lodge in Phoenix, having completed his wonderful ride. Always fun to continue to stalk the SPOTs even after they finish.

I am a scratch.

All, thanks for the comments and support (even though this is self-supported). I had an amazing race and am still coming down off of whatever was going on out there. I was forced to DNF since I could no longer pedal without amazing pain in my right knee. I still have the strength and mindset to be out there riding, but no amount of compression, pill popping, elevating, ice (I was thinking about dunking it in snow once I was high enough), one-legged pedaling, walking, etc would help me summit mt lemmon OR cross that final stretch of desert for that matter. I had to face reality and save the knee so I can ride another day. I saved NOTHING for the swim back as my ride to le buzz was nothing short of haunting. The knee officially locked up as soon as I sat down for a chocolate milk, raspberry Italian soda, two waters, quesadilla plate, sandwich plate, fries, chips salsa and guacamole, and two cokes.

I learned so much and will be back next year.

And just a tiny shout out confirming what we already know: Rampages. Yeah, I aired my rampages up two days before the race. They are still at the same pressure.

I'll try and get a writeup and some pictures posted up soon.

Talked with Jill H. sounds like she's doing great and she's positive.  Her feet were swallow after day one but she hasn't mentioned them again.  The girl is a beast.

She is...I saw her at the store in Sonoita after she'd done a faceplant...washed it off and got back in it.  Heck of a competitor!

Did anyone notice that Karen Lundgren and Paul Romero started on the trail this morning? I have been hanging out watching (from my computer!) the back end of the race, rooting for MB and AM to get up and over that mountain! I looks like Beto bailed, as he had been keeping around the same pace as Arno, but I see that BA is on the West side of Tucson?
Congrats to the finishers and soon to be finishers! Great job.

Scott M continues to rail.  Must be in beast mode or something.  ~80miles to go with 14 hrs left inside of 48 hours ... do I smell a sub-2-day effort?  There's a chance here ... talk about setting the bar.

Kurt - well done on the new record, I thought you would still be sleeping it off!

Scott was 3 mins ahead of the new record time at Summerhaven, but over 3 hours up at Oracle. He did head into town to restock, but it only took 45 mins or so to get back out on route. I wonder if he'll get the same kind of no sleep molasses Kurt had around this stage, or if the heat will slow him worse than the advantage he had in crossing Oracle Ridge, but it's going to be close I suspect. Kurt took close to 24 hours from Oracle to Superior, showing how changes to the route have made the back of the race heavily loaded in terms of time needed, as from Oracle it's not much more than 1/3rd of the distance. I think Scott will struggle to break 48hrs given that - but then I think El Jefe didn't sleep at all when he put in his record setting, race winning run a few years back, maybe Scott will aim for the same? Exciting stuff!

Thanks, Ian!

From Summerhaven to Picketpost is nearly entirely singletrack now, and there's a lot of very slow and very challenging trail in there, so that's one of the reasons that 100 miles takes so dang long compared to the first 200. The last 50 are particularly tough...the most demanding section of the entire AZT300 route in my opinion. Scott is still looking strong, so hopefully he can get some sleep and keep up this pace for the last leg. Even Jefe slept around an hour each night when he set a new record a couple years back. But I think a sub-2-day time is out of the question. Scott would have to pick up his pace a bit as the trail becomes more difficult to make that happen. He should be able to make it in by noon, though, if he doesn't crack!

Scott is putting on one hell of a show.  At this rate the heat won't be a factor because he'll be done before it's warm tomorrow.  Surely he'll stop for a few hours sometime soon?  Freeman?

The Sonoran beast is on form!

A little background on Karen Lundgren and Paul Romero for those that don't know anything about them. I met them several years ago through the adventure racing community and those two are pretty incredible. They just finished up knocking off the seven summits with their son Jordan Romero this year and have a string of top finishes in adventure races over more than a decade ranging from 2 hour races up to three weeks long. They seem to be starting off slower then I thought they would but knowing them, they seem to excel the longer the race is.

Paul's Facebook post from about an hour ago
"Started the race eating a box of nails for 9 hrs.holy crap this trail Is serious biz. Refueling in Patagonia, az, super k and bikes r well."

Good luck to everyone still racing!
