Tim, thank you, and Fritz, for your continuing work on Oracle Ridge! I followed your tracks in the snow down, marveling at how I didn't take a single branch to the face. The trail is worlds different from 3 or 4 years ago...now it at least looks like a trail in most places.

It's a never ending project up there no doubt, but little by little even if it's only once a year we'll keep things in shape.

I definitely saw some places that could use some benching in that section.

How was the last mile down to Cody?

Well, then, what a beast of a route, since what y'all are saying, and the rider times are now showing, is that the back-half 100miles takes approx. 24 hrs..  Avg speed of 3 to 5mph ?  What a challenge.  Not that I wasn't before, but I'm even more impressed with everyone's effort now!

....ummmm, yeah.  Oracle to Freeman Rd. is insanely slow....the trail is not a trail in some sections...it's not even recognizable as a goat path....cattle take lines more obvious than the AZT route in this area.  For some sections, it's just pure, overland travel....seeking rock carins on off-camber talus slopes.  The miles on paper and topofusion are EXTREMELY deceiving unless you've ridden this section....give the APC a try and you'll experience it for your self.

Lots of finishers last night! Brad K and Matt F had a big day, pushing all the way to Apache Junction.

Scott is continuing to have an awesome ride! It looks like he made it through the tough hours of the night with a couple stops to nap. He's still looking to have a noonish finishing time if he can make it through the tough sections along/above the Gila at a strong pace.

That should make the 750 race more interesting ... with a big rest last night by Kurt S + earlier start by BK and MF, the gap is *only* 20 miles to start the day today.

Heating up in Superior right now....I imagine the heat would be a good carrot for Scott to press on despite not sleeping the past 48 hours. Scott planned to try to finish with people in order to score a ride home. I am hoping passing Brad M might have led to a conversation about getting a ride.

If anyone is going to be down there and help Scott out, I can PM his cell phone number. I had talked about picking him up if it was later in the day, but it seems as though he will be arriving in the next 2-3 hours.

Looks like Aaron B is making a detour to Superior.

The large group near APC is going to have a very hot ride today. Plenty of places for water though. We might get some pictures back of people jumping in the Gila should they make it to Kearney today.  thumbsup

Spoke to Jill H. again tonight.  She wasn't trusting her Spot and thought she had lost the trail just past the Gila.  Turns out she was on the right track.  I gave here some landmarks and encouragement and she was on the move again.  She said she's pushing through the night then going to sleep a while at the next way point.  Spirits are high but she would agree with the others that the second 100 miles is a beast.  She pushed a ton and walked a lot of downhills.

The new sections of the AZT in the APC add about 30 mins minimum. Bloodsucker was actually faster. Even the new stuff north of Ripsey is slow going. I think we have 4-5 hours of more ST than we did 4 years ago in the AZT 300. And we are still getting more ST by the day on the other side of the Gila as the finish turning the road into ST.

Yeah, you said it Chad. This course is worlds harder than the route the first time I raced it in 2009. The only thing that's gotten faster is Oracle Ridge, believe it or not!

Had a great time on the ride.  It was great meeting and hanging out with everyone at the start and along the way.  See you all at the next race!  Anyone that is going to race the divide I will see you in Banff in less than 2 months!

Hey Kurt.  Nice ride dude.

I'm glad you confirmed my feeling that the current route is a little slower than in the past.  I felt like that last push fron the construction to the end was way longer than the old mining road.  Anyway, good times.  I had a blast riding with Steve W and it was nice meeting Phil, Carol and Tanner at Summerhaven

So what the hell is up with Scott waiting for a better weather window?  Everybody please give him shit for that.

As much weather as Scott missed on Saturday, he had some northern winds to push into yesterday... atleast if my afterwork ride is any indication of what it was like north of Oracle.  Still looks to be well on his way to a new record.

I see he was stopped for 4.5 hours... so I assume he did sleep a few hours.  I want to try this race next year, and a little sleep vs a lot of sleep vs no sleep is the big question I will have to answer.  That and how to minimize the amount of crap I carry on my recent attempts at bikepacking!

Did Scott just set a new AZT300 record?   I will add this  headbang for his great ride whether it's a new record or not!

Did Scott just set a new AZT300 record?   Just in case, I will this  headbang !

He did indeed! He came in a bit shy of 3 hours faster than I did the other day. That was an awesome ride. I figure I lost 3-4 hours due to the snow and cold, so that means we probably would have been neck and neck the entire time had he started with the rest of us. Man would that have been fun!

Awesome ride, Scott! Go get some DQ!
