Stefan - great job on getting the site up and running - looking good! Love the new CTR Course Record History section and how it includes the course variations and each new record holder instead of just the most recent record holder, showing a progression.

Toby, Excellent article. I can totally relate to your comments about lightning. I've never felt so helpless as *laying under my tarp, below Georgia pass in the middle of the night, having lightning strike all around. Pure terror. Re: Cars - Guess it's because I commute, but I never felt that endangered by vehicles on the CTR. Even riding on 285 didn't seem as bad as some urban situations I've dealt with. When riding on asphalt, I just ride like I'm invisible. This is the best strategy to stay alive. People always say to try and establish eye contact with vehicles. That doesn't work. Best bet is to just assume they never see you and be ready to react. Edit: *I was "laying under my tarp" for something like four hours, with storm cells rolling thru every 45-60 minutes. Too tired to ball up in the lightning position. Each storm that rolled thru produced a minimum light to sound separation of less than a half-second. One bolt was probably 100 yards away or less - the sound and light were pretty much simultaneous. If I could have snapped my fingers to transport myself away and quit, I would have. |

I agree Yogi, I didn't find 285 that bad and I rode it on a Sunday afternoon. There were some sections that made me wish for more of a shoulder but overall I didn't think it was too bad. I'm a road commuter too so maybe that plays in to my comfort of being on the road with vehicles. I won't be doing the Tarryall on my thru ride and will instead take the 285 ride.

I hated the 285 detour over all others. But then I really don't like riding on roads unless they're dirt or little-used pavement... cars (or, more accurately, drivers) scare the crap out of me. "...I applaud your Darwinian creativity." Classic Toby, in a good way!  |

Did anyone take the Leadville bypass last year? I planned on taking it but had to bail in Leadville due to knee problems. Just wondering about the road conditions etc. on that route.

I took the Leadville bypass. Roads were fine.... No issues with that bypass whatsoever.... Although all my spot stalkers thought I'd screwed up and got off-route. |

Yep, I stopped at the gas station just beyond the bypass and went back. Not sure if it saved time or not but I'm glad I did not go thru town or I would have stopped and wasted some time no doubt. |
