But seriously, I have seen these on some frames. It seems like a simple solution. OTOH, that same hole can also be access for water and open air that can still contribute to rusting. I'd think the benefits would outweigh the issues, though.

Not that I am going to rely on Apple's oasis, but anybody know if he is going to be on the CT this summer? And didn't he change location from years past? He wasn't around when I went thru in '12. Would love to shake his hand and thank him...

I was wondering the same thing.  it's not so much a matter of wanting him to be there so I can take his food.  Really, what he brings to the CTR is just something to look forward to.  it's not about the calories that he provides, but the mental boost of seeing him out there and having a reason to stop for a moment.  It's always great to have his camp there to break up that long stretch of nothingness and loneliness.

Yup, I am taking off tomorrow for Texas Creek, where I was last year. It is a mile north of the 18/19 boundary in section 18. We plan to have water and Gatorade for the bikers this year as well as some shelter. See you guys in August!   apple

So is the yurt on seg 22 kosher for anyone to sleep in that is trail traveling during the summer?  Just read Scott and Ezters blog and they stayed there. I'm not necessarily planning on camping there, but if the timing worked out, that would be pretty cool.

I had a similar thought in that, strictly as safety information in the event of extremely inclement weather, it would be good to know where they are.
I have only seen references to a yurt and to a cabin or two, but no list.

Definitely not planning on using them or displacing backcountry renters, but it would be a shame for a person to be in need of and close to emergency shelter, but to not know that it is there.

Christina N. stayed in that yurt during a nasty stretch of weather last year - she was a couple days ahead of me on her ITT. I do remember her saying something about a sheep herder staying there? She could fill in with better info than me. Here's her final call in from last year.

I would guess the CTF facebook page would be a good place to ask about the Yurt too.

Actually, she stopped in a small sheep herder trailer at first and then continued on a little ways to get to the yurt.

The yurt isn't visible in the southbound direction unless you look back in the northbound direction.

Doing a Google search for "Lake City, CO yurt" produces the link below. Unless the yurt is unfilled/unoccupied and/or it's an emergency, I don't think one can expect to have an unlocked door and a place to stay, without having at least contacted Hinsdale to discuss options .

Edit: When I last went thru there in '12, the sheepherder had his own trailer parked on Jarosa.
Also, If you go to the link above, you will see the Friends yurt on the MAP and also Rambo yurt, a little bit off the CT to the north. I don't think Fawn is setup in the summer.

Here in Durango, burritos are best at Zia... lots of other options though.  Zia North is seven blocks north of where Junction Street/25th Street intersects Main Avenue.

In 2012 I was bikepacking up near that yurt and it was completely destroyed due to a wind event.  Guess they've rebuilt it - I don't remember whether it was back together during last year's CTR or not.  What else don't I remember?!  Yikes.

I've got a pretty good idea as to where it is. I remember seeing it after crossing Jarosa, but I also remember seeing it when looking backwards. That would be inline with what others stated.

I did the same thing for my first CTR--and it was such a cool surprise to finally roll into his camp. Discovery is a big part of a good adventure!

Can anyone tell me if this link is where one crosses Co 114 to pretty much start the Cochetopa hills bypass?  My wife is going to be there to give me a drop, but I want to make sure this is where we cross.  I vaguely remember it and looking at the CT Trailbook I think this is the place.

yep.
if you are going southbound, you will drop on 114 from county road 31CC just to the east of that pull out and will connect back up with the trail going south from 114 at the pull out you have marked on the map.
