Hi again,  not sure what to say about what I will do differently this year.  I mentioned in a previous post the idea of flexibility  (not my strong suit)  Looking back,  taking it easier in those first days and not trying to BEAT the nasty weather, but simply to accept it, slow down a bit,  know that it had to improve.  I was too much in "race mode"  (ironic since i didn't consider myself to be racing as much as participating in an "event").  Hard to  pin that down specifically, because of course, for every story of "take it easy, this will pass",  someone could chime in with a story of "I pushed hard and got through it".

I suppose that's why the tour divide is so epic, there really is no single method or philosophy/approach that would be guaranteed to work at any given time.  "Go with the flow" and accept two truths about adventure racing (or I suppose life in general)

No matter how great you feel at any time,  sooner or later you WILL feel worse.
No matter how lousy you feel at any time,  sooner or later you WILL feel better.

I hope that better gear and a more realistic view of the magnitude of getting to Antelope Wells will help to move me more effectively through the first days and get some momentum to keep me going.

Anyone have any details on SPOT Tracker rentals for the race? Sent an email to Track leaders but haven't heard back. Also, are most of you downloading the course maps for GPS navigation via Topofusion or another resource?

Jeff, last year the official gps file and info on Spots was sent a couple weeks before race start.  As long as you've submitted you letter of intent to the TD website you should get the mass email we all look forward to soon.  Apparently the course has a few minor modifications this year so I wouldn't count on any currently downloadable file being our official route just yet.  Scott M put up this post a few pages back regarding Spots/tracking.
Very soon we will publish a TD-specific tracking registration page.  It is nearly ready.  You'll fill out your bio and add SPOT ESN/Share Page there.

I had an email from Matthew Lee last week. He's out scouting some route changes this week.

"I am looking very seriously at bypassing Rawlins, WY altogether as there is a major construction closure again this year + a mega windfarm going in over the next few years. The result if I am successful will be to convert nearly 100mi of pavement into less than 5 mi of pavement."

I carried most of my Lithiums from the start. 8 AAA, 12 AAs or something like that. I had my eTrex GPS on the whole time. Lithium batteries are gold on the route. You will probably find them in the big towns but at a premium. I found some in Pinedale and they wanted $18 for a 4AAs. By the time I got to Silver City, bought some regular batteries. With the eTrex I replace every 2.5 - 3 days, with my Spot Gen 3 think I swapped maybe twice.

FYI Amazon has screamin' prices on Lithiums.

What are the best weather apps for Android for US weather? Something with 48 hours of hourly temperature, precipitation and wind direction. I'm in Europe and use local apps which don't cover the US.

Yes, lithium are available in AA and AAA many places along the way.  I got mine mostly at Walmarts.  Alkaline more common in smaller places.

I like Accuweather. Easy app, fast loading map.

Weather.com is ok, but loads slow for me. Probably due to the ads.

I imagine both will be available at roughly the same time.  As mentioned earlier Matthew is out scouting both the Union Pass reroute and the Basin/Rawlins possible reroute.  Once he's back we will get the GPX together ASAP.

Darn starting to think I should just drop everything and drive to banff or Antelope wells... Jealous of your suffering!

Wondering from Matt's quote of bypassing Rawlins--I don't remember any other towns in southern Wyoming... I needed food and water pretty bad by that point.
By the way, wet/snowy in Colorado the past weeks. Hope it dries out but stays cool for a fast fun trip!

Jarral -- not to late to commit!

The new route would hit the "town" of Wamsutter.  It's a 24 hour truck stop with Subway, food, batts, showers, etc.  I'd imagine it will be an improvement over wandering around Rawlins.

Scott, The only thing redeeming thing about Rawlins was catching Ez and eating her chips. Nice smile after a windy dry dusty basin to lift the spirits! So I guess a truck stop would work otherwise.

Yeah got all the stuff. Could be out the door in a few minutes!

Just a note alkaline batteries work better and last longer in the etrex.
I'm salivating at the thought of getting my teeth in that gpx file haha.
