Gaia app only needs GPS connection to work, cell service not required.

I used Gaia as a back up to my Etrex 30. I think it is actually more reliable than the Garmin. The Garmin's seem to do weird un-predictable and inconsistent things. It also made sense as I left the iPhone plugged into my dynamo hub (music, pics, GPS)

What is (a) tick twister?  The only thing I've heard about removing ticks is the end of a lit cigarette or something.  I'm not from tick country.

I've used them on dogs and people, work great. You have to destroy the tick afterwards, otherwise it'll get back on ya!

How did you mount your phone? i have an Iphone 6 which is a little big.

Check out the Eureka forecast for Monday and Tuesday.  98 degrees.  I sure hope it cools down by the time I get there.  On the other hand maybe no snow on Whitefish and Red Meadow?

Hi,

How are you all securing your GPS's. I hear many have a back-up lanyard/cord in case it comes out of the mount, but how are you fixing it to the Garmin it so it is removable? I'm running an Edge 800 and was thinking to use an out front bike mount, but I can't figure out the backup system.

i use a girth hitched leash along with the Garmin mount. I also made 3mm bungee cord retainer with a draw cord instead of zip ties.

Eureka weather - Eureka is the low point (harr harr  icon_biggrin) in the elevation plot for the route, thus higher temps. You won't spend much time in the town. Fortunately there's a cooling trend from June 12-17th, temps in mid 80's, cloud cover, some precip. By the time you climb out of Eureka onto Whitefish divide, temps will be low 80-mid 70's.

The whole region is expecting a moderating/drying trend from last and next week weather. 'Dry' is a relative term :>

JC - That girth hitch will work fine with the Etrex and Dakota, but unfortunately the 800 does not have a loop for a lanyard. Sad

Another option is an app call "Pocket Earth" which allows you to download maps of each state/province and as you zoom in it shows the CDMBR track at a pretty high level.  I am not using as my main source (Etrex 20) but I was able to add the 2015 gpx and kml file to the app also.  I also bought the GAIA app under the theory that it never hurts to have additional backup. The track can be uploaded and seen but it doesnt seem as clear or as quick as pocket earth.

If you're on android, there's an app called BackCountry Navigator http://bit.ly/1KFZm0d, you can download, and store map tiles, by manually selectable areas from lots of sources. Best for TD seems to be "USGS Topo Maps - ArcGIS" you can overlay gpx routes and waypoints too.



Here's mine, using cached tiles, the TD official .gpx and my own set of POIs.

I just went back over the entire 2015 TD thread looking for a couple posts I wanted to re-read.  I was amazed how much of it has been devoted to electronics and technology, particularly since the race is ostensibly a physiologic and mechanical endeavor.   Maybe there will be a future division relegated to low tech/no tech racers, like singlespeed or NoBo/SoBo or male/female.  It would also be fun to go back and review the first TD forums and see what the focus was.

I think part of that may be because people feel that they have those items fairly well covered, and there's been a lot of discussion of them in the past for people to review and learn from. The electronics/tech thing is fairly new, and a lot of people don't have the time to learn about electronics, charging etc, so the number of posts devoted to lights, electronics and keeping your GPS charged and running isn't terribly surprising (to me).

Another electronics issue that I have not seen discussed yet. IOS 8.3 something for iPhones has now enabled the GPS locater to work in Airplane mode. The inability to run the iPhone in airplane mode while using GAIA GPS has always been a big headache for battery life and discussed in many forums. I ran a search this morning to see if anything had changed and noted a thread started about a week ago where several hikers noted they could now use Airplane mode and GAIA with their latest IOS update. I just returned from three hours active mapping using airplane mode and GAIA and it worked great. Should have much improved battery life for the long 4 mile an hour slogs.

I was wondering what others got for the milage difference near Fish Lake Mtn re-route. I calculated 8.8 less miles then if we were to go over Union Pass.
