I just spoke with Rob at the Outdoorsman in Butte. He asked that I post that he is short staffed this summer and that racers should adjust repair expectations accordingly. More complicated repairs (brake bleeds, suspension work) are best dealt with in Helena. He is fine with racers wrenching their own bikes in his shop and he is stocked with chains other wear items. Hours M-F 10-6, Sat 9-5 Sun closed.

Nice to know about the Outdoorsman! I've probably already posted this before, but be kind to ALL the bike shop owners/repair people/staff, at every stop you make. They're essential in making sure you keep on riding!

Also, Rob (nice guy) has a motel attached to the shop (Day's Inn?? I think), or vice-verse, so if TD racers need sleep and bike fixin', there you go!
For an hour of entertainment, ask Rob about Lance Armstrong...heh-heh.
PS For swelling legs, compression socks are available across the street at the drug store. Get the 'Dress' version, not those for Diabetic Control. Don't ask how I know...

I find this interesting. As a business owner myself, I always have and always will try to exceed my customers expectations. Announcing expected under-delivering of expectations for a predictable event? last year, I came off Flathead, Whitefish and Red Meadow pass with a bike badly in need of some love. I called the one in Whitefish and I apologize for not remembering the name but they were absolutely swamped with hurt bikes due to the weather. They got me in 5 minutes before closing and had me ready to race first thing in the morning. They over-delivered. They also bring in extra help knowing the race is coming through. There is a shop guy here in Phoenix whom goes to Steamboat every summer to help at a well known shop for the TD. The way I read the post is "Please get your bike fixed either before you get here or after you leave." Either way, Good luck to not only all the racers but all the vendors, restauranteurs, bike shops, and please be patient both directions vendor-racers and racer-vendors. There are some absolutely salt of the earth, fine people out there. Their kindness and magical empathy will leave you never wanting to forget them. Steve |

No arguments from me, but it seems that Rob is VERY customer-oriented and would be upset with himself if he had a shop full of broken-down bikes and not be able to service them all, so he would rather turn away business than disappoint riders. |

Rob and his team were almost stood in the carpark waiting for me to arrive last year on the assumption that i might need some work (i did - BB).
I remember him commenting that in the past he had wanted to extend the same accessibility to his shop to all riders, so if he stayed open late for one he'd stay open for late for all and added it was getting harder to sustain, harder still if you don't have the staff

Bob M - That was my take away from the conversation with Rob. He is a good guy, has always been really psyched on the race, and has gone above and beyond to support TD racers many times in the past. He of course does not want to turn away business but he also wants TD racers to know the current situation at his shop - that he is short on skilled staff (hard to come by in Butte apparently) but that he will do everything he can within his current capacity to help us out. Any skilled mechanics out there who want to head to Butte for a few weeks to help him/us out?

He turned around right where the largest snowfield was last year. Eszter and I ran into a couple guys trying to get a moto through there, rather unsuccessfully. It was easy to carry through, but there may be a lot more snow than last year. |
