I'm really rooting for Jack Mahler.
What an incredible feat it would be for someone to finish either azt race on a unicycle!
There's no doubt that he holds the record so far just getting as far as he has.
Hopefully he isn't too disheartened by sections like oracle ridge (which I can't even fathom any part being ride-able on a unicycle) and makes it to the trails up north of the mogolon rim where he can shred.
Also, I really hope some of the Tucson natives will make it out to take pics/video of this guy's setup and how he rides that thing.

Congrats to Neil B of bikepacker's mag for the win in the 300!  Neil S followed shortly behind on his singlespeed.

Our unicyclist is still at it.  Eszter got a pic or two of him that is in the FB gallery.

A bit late but I was at Picket post when Neil B came through and he said he was feeling great!  He didn't waste much time before rolling out.

Hello,

I am still alive. In Tucson at Broadway Bicycles getting my front caliper rebuilt. Off the start, it began with a thorn puncture, followed with a sidewall tear out. My front pads were screaming so I replaced them. Dirt build up on a piston with wore out pads or what I have no clue. The piston would not retrack and I ended up with a locked up front rotor. Fought it into Patagonia where I went to work with some mineral oil and Qtips. Thought I had it fixed and headed back out on the trail. More squealing and caliper issues. At that time I met up with JD. We pushed through the night attempting to clear Canelo Pass. Eventually, I just had to flip the bike over and pull my front break pads. Road to Tucson without front breaks, burned up the rear pads, Flintstone era brakes! No pads in stock, luckily I have two sets with me.

Uh oh... Jack Mahler (unicycle man) has been idle at the Colossal Cave visitor center. I hope everything is ok and he's just taking a long break indoors.

It's a nice place to sit on the patio, chow a burger and ice cream and take in some shade during the heat of the day.  I'm betting he will be rolling soon.  Finishing? We'll see. Anything is possible at the right pace.

What happened to Hunter Keating?  Great job everyone.  Keep'em turnin.

Hunter finished it up around 3pm for second place behind Neil.  I just heard from him and have forced a point for him at Picketpost.

That looks like record pace or better on the 750 for Neil. What say you Scott M.?

Here are Kurt's remaining splits from 2010.

Name   Superior   Roosevelt Lake   Payson   Flagstaff   South Rim   North Rim   Utah
Kurt Refsnider   2:09:13   3:03:18   3:08:37   5:03:43   6:00:49   6:21:12   7:05:02

Neil is running at 3:02:45 for Payson, so, yes, ahead of record pace!

In 2010 Kurt crushed Jefe's newly minted (during the 'grand depart') 300 record (at a time that wouldn't garner top five this year) then rested a full night at the Best Western in Apache Junction (correct me if I'm wrong, Kurt).  That is probably where a lot of the time to Payson is made up.

The route was somewhat different back then, and Kurt did have a few extra snow detours in play (Mormon Mtn and Snowbowl), so if Neil can continue this pace, he'll for sure claim the fastest time.

Scratches:  Norb is out -- stomach has failed him.  No calories = no bueno on the AZT.  Derrick Perrin is also out, experiencing breathing issues (that's the 3rd to drop from asthma or breathing related issues).  Derrick had recovered from a taco'd wheel and bearings.

I hope Jack is able to keep going on his municycle!  Matt Nelson said he's pretty sure two others have completed the trail on their municycles.  He is going to confirm their actual distance and get back with me.  Perhaps Jack's at least setting history as the youngest municyclist.  Keep going, Jack!

George battled stomach issues yesterday, too, and took in little to no calories.  I'm hoping he is able to recover and keep going.  So far, so good!  I haven't received the "pick me up" ping from his tracker.  :-)

I finished up the 300 at 10:10 this morning, and I just wanted to express one heartfelt feeling before I get home, and that is: 'fuck you, Oracle Ridge'  icon_biggrin

Wondering the same.  Seems like he might have determined the 300 to be 'enough.'
