We have a campground spot reserved at Chatfield Lake for CTR Eve, Saturday night. We're in Loop-D, Spot-172. We can fit a second vehicle and/or a couple of bikepackers. It's nice to take a hot 4:45 wake-up shower and drive to the start with a hot drink in hand. For the short drive over Sunday morning, ~15 minutes, I can also fit another bike or two in the van. Send me a PM if interested.

Yeah, Kaitlyn's not having much luck this year. I played leapfrog with her during the first couple days of the AZT this year. By the end of the second day, her pace was blowing me away. I remember pulling into the Boulders Passage trailhead pagoda, where she was waiting to be extracted after deciding to bail.
Oh no!  She crashed on the first descent and has scratched.  Tough year for Kaitlyn so far, sorry Kait!

Quick question as I have not ridden the Tarryall detour in past CTR ride - any services there at all or purely camping and old buildings. I cannot find anything definitive on the internet. Do most people detour from Kenosha to Jefferson store or carry extra now without Baily on route.

That's terrible to hear. I rode Kenosha to Breck yesterday and it was definitely slippery and nasty. There are some downed trees the whole way down Georgia pass.

Bob Loblaw - I'm planning to do a similar ride in a couple weeks starting from Kenosha, how long did it take to get from the start to Breck? Trying to get a rough # of hours to be able to plan

Fully loaded for me it took 6.5 hours at a relaxed, steady pace. If you check out trackleaders for the 2014 CTR, you can see how long it took other people.

Beardog, there is the Stagestop Store and Saloon at the end of the pavement section of the detour.

Roughly 100 miles in, Stages Stop Saloon and a tiny store connected. Google Review "Best bar on the Tarryall." Smiley

I called and talked to proprietor Pat [?] a couple days ago, to make sure they are still in business. He said that they would be open until at least 8PM that Sunday...

Thanks Barry, the Google says they're open til 10, so it's nice to get info directly from them.

I've never been there, so could anyone tell me how safe it would be to rely on getting some calories (~1-2K) from the store?

Very safe. Pat is a fan of the race, at least he was a few years back...greeted me by name out front of his store! His mercantile was pretty well stocked with the basics to get you through to Breck/Copper. Plus if you get there in time, you can get a nice steak dinner. He may even let you crash in his 'beer garden' out back.

@Bob,
I rode thru there during the 2014 CTR. It was quite the oasis, as I rode up totally soaked and cold, having ridden three hours in the rain and hail. Think I had a personal pizza, burger, fries and a pint from the bar side, while I dried and thawed out. Only insight I have on the store side is that they have a most awesome clothes dryer. And even though the bar and store are the same building, they are separated by an interior wall, I'm sure it's a liquor license thing, and you have to walk outside to go from one to the other.
In previous years, the Stagestop guys were a bit into stalking CTR riders [per my research years ago, combing thru these Bikepacking forums] and extended their hours to accommodate racers. However, just to be conservative, I wouldn't count on past experience and my anecdotal account...

Hope this doesn't jinx the weather, piss-off the Monsoon Gods and mean forest fires will erupt, but sure would be nice to attempt the CTR without the monsoon raging...
Two precip forecast images: one for month of July and the other July 19-29 period.

Hello! I am planning on doing the group start in Denver and am looking for someone to drive my car to Durango. Having the car arrive Durango anytime July 24 - Aug 3 would be fine for me. Maybe you have two family/friends coming down to meet you at the finish and one of them could drive my car? Or maybe you are riding Durango --> Denver and need a way back to Durango? Let me know! I am hoping to continue my way home to CA after the race instead of going back to Denver.

Heather (ps. I never knew how appropriate my moniker was for the CTR until I started pre-riding some segments. Hikeabike indeed.)

@Hike-a-bike
After the carry-a-bike bits at the top of Fooses [traction pending] and atop Coney, you might have a new alias... -B  Wink

I'm planning for an ITT starting Aug 6th and I pre-rode the start of the trail Friday evening and Saturday. Its safe to say that Pat is still a fan of the race. He greeted me at the bar and told me I was a few weeks early. He sounded excited to see everyone stop through at the start of the race. It certainly is a great thing to look forward to after 60 miles on the tarryall detour.

Chris Jones is a friend of mine and also a Forest Service Firefighter/Buff Creek addict--his patrol area is also Buff Creek....----where the CT sections 2 and 3 pass through....he posted this on a local FB mtb page......just a heads up!!!!

---There are now fire restrictions on the Pike National Forest. This includes the Buffalo Creek area. Please do not have a camp fire or use charcoal grills. Stoves are fine. Thanks! From a Forest Service firefighter and Buffalo Creek addict-----
