Looks to me like the lead pack pace is off a couple hours from 2014 for the first day.  Anyone know if there has been weather or other trail condition issues?
i was out in at buff creek yesterday morning to see the bunch come through.  the weather started off a bit cloudy and cool.  most that passed by were applauding with the cool temps and cloud cover.  but by 11 am, the clouds went away and sun was out.  the weather overlay feature on trackleaders showed wonderful conditions most of the day yesterday.....

Very proud of all the people I know out there racing. Ben is up front, riding very smart I'm sure, but with this being his first bikepacking race, he's carrying a bit more that the usual leaders on this course. With food and water he's powering a 50+ lb rig! I've watched Teresa pop into the top ten a few times. She's pushing a proportionally heavy rig for her 115 lb body weight and rides with hiking shoes and flat pedals. She has so much determination I'm sure she'll keep moving whenever she can. Also, a friend from college, Alyssum, decided a few weeks ago to do this. She hasn't been riding much and pretty much just threw some stuff in a backpack. She didn't have a bad first day and then took a good rest. It's literally an off the couch effort for her. And you all know who Jefe and Neil are so I don't have to say anything further!

... as well as Aaron Johnson mixing it up at the front... the only rider who could finish on the podium and win an Oscar for Best Director!

This year's start was the most chill start ever I think. The combination of it actually being light at 5:30, the huge parking area at Waterton, and just the general comfort level most people have with bikepacking these days gave the start an aura of anticipation and excitement, but not so much nervousness as I've felt in years past.

As I said in my "speech" at 5:55am:  Be Safe. Have Fun. Go Fast!  In that order.   glasses2

Also, Austin Breunig didn't show up, and his SPOT was in my car while I went climbing up at Mt. Evans after the start. In case anyone was wondering about his odd track...

I don't envy them that HAB up Ten Mile right now. If you've packed too much - it's right there that you realize it!

I briefly talked to ben in the parking lot.  the fact that this is his first CTR and multiday bikepack event. he was quietly confident.  when he mentioned he planned to be up at the front with NB and JB, he was not kidding.  he did comment that his bike was probably heavier than others.  he blew things up at in the first couple segments.  seeing him blaze through, near the end of segment 2, was impressive.  a lean, mean, cycling machine.  he was al smiles as he rallied past us......

Thanks for the background on some of the playas out there.  Always good to know some background behind the dots.

Just got a note that Todd Johnson is scratching.  He was going 'alpine style' carrying all food but he said the weight was too much for him, he had a bad wreck and couldn't deal.  Good on him for dreaming big!

another mention of a relative newby to the CTR is a young ultra runner turned bikepacker-Paul Hamilton.  I was told by a friend, who is also racing the CTR, to watch this guy.  Apparently a wicked ultra endurance runner.  It was also mentioned to watch him when the altitude gets high.  I believe he was on a ht Surly. and is sitting in the 7th spot

Wow - watching the blue dots is very fascinating (and addictive)!  This is a great race, with Ben tearing it up on his first CTR and Jefe and Aaron not far behind.  Also, Neil is hitting it pretty hard, though starting a day behind.  Can't wait to watch how this develops.

It does look like Ben is increasing his lead over Jefe (from about 4 miles to about 8-10 miles in the last several hours) but Jefe's strength is being able to continue near non-stop and to suffer so this will amazing to watch as each racer has their own strengths and strategy.

Right around 3 hours total (one hour per night).  I don't recommend it!

Jesse - oops, you are right!  Forgot that little detail about coming DOWN Kokomo Pass.  Ben's blue dot has not refreshed, though, in over an hour.  I keep hitting refresh, which is such hard work that I can almost feel how hard these racers are working Smiley

I had no idea an hour per night was even possible until I witnessed Jefe a few years in a row pull that off (even skip the first night in the CTR and TD!).  My first CTR I thought I was pushing the limits with 5-6 hours per night and in 2013 I was running ragged with 2-3 hrs per night.  I normally sleep a solid 9 hrs per night and even when life gets super busy I do everything I can to get at least 7.  So basically the CTR is waaaaaaay off my norm!  My prep was to sleep as much as possible the week before the race and avoid all caffeine for a month before.

WOW, man.  that is something else.  both of you!  to be able to pull that off.  I could swear Jefe said that he has trouble sleeping normally.  so going without sleep could be easier for him to do.  Regardless....you, Jefe, and all the others that do this event are worthy of a massive round of applause.  it's "off the charts" impressive......

Perhaps the hardest part of the whole endeavor!  Wink
