Hey. Did anyone just see Ben Parmen sneak past Jefe?
Haha. He got passed up while sleeping in the exact same spot I slept in my first time on the Cataract section. Can't fault him though, it's an excellent camping spot.  |

Looks like Jefe slept a good deal and timed the opening of the store at 7am just about perfect. He really made up the ground he lost while sleeping! Ben kept moving most of the night but maybe got an hour of sleep. It'll be interesting from here! 15 hrs, 20 hrs, more to go? Still so unknown what could happen.

With how much work he's done to this point and the extra sleep Jefe got I'd be surprised if Neil can catch him but I'm pretty sure he's going to beat my time from last year! I was 3d20h14m Trailhead to Trailhead and that gives him about 16 hours once he can resupply in Silverton and get rolling for the final leg. It wont be a leisurely ride but I'm certain he's using every cell in his body to get there as fast as he can. The record is his if he can get to Durango befor 2:14am. Get it Neil! |

Jefe clearly realized he wouldn't make it to Silverton by 9/10 pm last night and did a great job getting lots of rest and arriving just as the stores opened this morning. He is now well rested, probably ate and got supplies for the final push. Ben pushed hard to get past Jefe last night but only got about an hour sleep so I don't know if he can keep up his super fast pace, but who knows? Seems like Ryan now has the race for third/podium in his favor with a 20 mile lead over Aaron D. and Aaron J. waiting for a bike repair in Lake City, but lots can happen before Durango.
Neil didn't get much rest either but I tend to think his stop in Silverton will be brief before he continues one last, hard push.

Ryan Franz is also looking really strong right now and put some distance on Aaron Denberg. As for Neil making the catch, with him being a day behind the others, and both Ben and Jefe well positioned at this time to break 5 days....

Oh records (I hate to sit and speculate before it's written in stone - isn't there a saying about chickens or eggs hatching? count your chickens eggs?) but with different directions, thoughts on which way is easier, timing starting in town last year, 1000 more vert this year, there is only one way to determine to the ultimate ctr champion.... dramatic cinema shot pans to Jesse's garage... the race bike... sitting in dust... just gets brushed off. |

I think the weather has waaaaaaay more influence in time than the direction. There are a lot of debates you can make about what hills you climb or coast down in which direction but I think one bad hail storm at 12,000 feet will wash away those differences in one scared heartbeat! As for ultimate CTR champion, that's easy, Matt! Anyone who finishes the trail is a champion  . Going fast just means you aren't out there suffering for as long! |

I do still have my CTR bike but I haven't actually used it since the race last year. It's my trophy but maybe it will be needed again! |

Just got word from Paul that he is pulling out in Silverton. He waited 8 hrs for the next rider in Sargents since he lost his GPS, then ran too low on food. Seems like he was stoked on the experience, though.
