In Feb-March 2016, Jonathan Kennett will be running Tour Aotearoa - a 3000 km brevet from Cape Reinga to Bluff. It will follow a similar route to the one described at the back of Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails. The route will be updated at the end of next year to include several sections of new cycle trails that are currently being constructed. This length-of-New-Zealand brevet will be organised along the same lines as the Kiwi Brevet, and will probably be a one-off event (who would be crazy enough to do this ride twice?). No entry fees, no prizes, just an unforgettable ride that will take from 15 to 30 days. Tour Aotearoa will also have two brevette options: the North Island section and the South Island section (both around 1500 km long). http://touraotearoa.blogspot.co.nz/ |

Wow. I wish I had time off then-- sounds incredible! I dont have the book handy (just ordered it), how much of this ride is on asphalt roads, dirt roads, or singletrack?

Are there bears in New Zealand?
Ok, serious question - which one would would be the better route? Also, what is the route composition? I saw some rail-trail, but is there singletrack, gravel, or is it mostly road riding? If one were to ride one route or the other, which would be the one you would pick? I'm REALLY interested in this...interested enough to skip a winter trip to Alaska for this, haha. If I can get the days off, I'm almost certainly in!

I don't think anyone has done the analysis on this yet. There's going to be a bunch of gravel road, quite a bit of tarmac, some very good single track, quite a few cycle trails in awesome locations, a few ferry rides and at least one beach ride. I chatted with Jonathan the other day and he's still tossing up on the details.... hike-a-bike or not? Not decided yet...... |

I am a definite on this one. I am planning to pre ride separately both North and South Islands over the next 18 months in preparation. Having previously ridden the length if the country via road a few years ago, I can assure anyone contemplating this it is every bit as challenging and scenic as the GDR. It won't have the same altitude and it's hard to get more than 50 miles from a point of civilisation in NZ, but we don't have guns, we don't have bears and in February and March the chance of snow is pretty small. If you are contemplating it, make it a family affair. Bring the spouse and kids and let them enjoy the best time of the year down under and soak up a culture and environment very different to Nth America.

Done and done! Or we could turn this into a real Bike-"paddling" EPIC and throw our bikes on an inflatable dinghy and make our way south! I mean, you would need one after all to go from island to island right? That's the only truly "pure" way to race this race I would think... Anything else would be touring...  |

I thought it was about time that this thread got bumped up again for a central discussion point.
I'm now concentrating on organising my transport to the start of the ride and true to form, not giving a second thought to how I will get home... that's for exhausted Adam to think about in March.
I would be keen see some of the rigs being used, etc. Personally, I'm trying decide if the cyclo set-up will be more advantageous than the rigid MTB tourer. Will slow trails and fast roads be easier than fast trails and slow roads?
