I'm looking into tires. The Maxxis Ikon seams to be the popular tire out there.
Looking at the specs on the tire there are several versions of the same tire.
3c, exo, and tr.
my guess is it has something to do with the compound of the rubber and or sidewalls. I do not see a break down on the website of what these are.
Can anyone tell me what those abbreviations are for?

Just sitting at home updating food stores for the summers trip to NM. It looks like there is a new store in Horca called the Red Bear.
I remember thre was nothing available in 2011 when I rode through, nor were there any just beyond La Manga Pass as the restaurant had closed. It made for a spot of rationing until the candy store in Canon Plaza.
Can anybody update the food options here please?

I had a catfish dinner, about 2 gallons of iced tea, a piece of blueberry pie and some rolls with honey at the Red Bear, it was delicious, having just arrived from Brazos Ridge. The convenience store was not open yet, waitress said they were working on it. This was on June 19 I think. ( Can't remember what else was on the menu, that was a special and I went for it !! ) |

Do remember that Paul's time was in 2011, when there were some massive detours.
Going Sobo, and not taking the detours, he passed me when I was still in Montana. MONTANA!
I remember he asked me about current beta for Richmond Peak, and I had it!
I also remember asking how NM was, and he told me the wells were locked tight, and sometimes guarded. That was a strange, strange year.

Foolhardy? No. It would be slower and you'll probably miss a few turns but you'd be OK. You wouldn't have to think about buying batteries. :-) |

An Etrex with spare batteries will be far lighter/smaller and faster for navigation than maps. A dynamo hub with cache battery is another option. Pdf the maps and race cues for backup. FWIW: I'll have the race cues printed so I've got some regular milestones during each day. |

I hate gadgets as well, and rode 2015 TD without GPS. Next time even though I know the route, I would use GPS. There was To much time wasted trying to figure out if I was going the right way, or not. with your/my brain in a fog most of the ride, it was hard to remember to reset cyclometer every time. |

The cues are mostly great. It's the "mostly" part that will get you. Signs disappear or change, roads get added. I took a GPS loaded with the route and kept it in my daypack and only brought it out when I had doubt as to which way was right. |

I've also done the route 2x with the paper queues and speedo. It's really sort of fun to check off all the lines on the queue sheet as you pass them (Cross Cattle Guard!), but it will somewhat keep a constant level of anxiety, if you're really trying to fly through a section.
I was a bit anti-GPS for a while, until the AZTR, where the queues aren't as polished, and you know: the dude putting it on is all about the GPX tracks, so for that race, it seemed nature to grab one.
If I was to do the TD again, it would be a speed run, for sure - no holds bar. I know have a pretty good idea on the lay of the course, but the course itself has changed, and my memory is getting a bit fuzzy on the details. Bringing along an eTrex 20 wouldn't feel that cumbersome, or annoying - the batteries last a long time, and it's got a lot of utility. You'll still want to pack along some sort of backup.
I remember making many mistakes using the paper queues - even on my second go of it. At the end I'm sure they amounted to hours and hours of time lost.
