I suspect it's something else. The 30x has a screen that shows an elevation plot of the course you've just completed, but it doesn't show you the plot of a track you're following. The 30(x) figures out elevation via barometric pressure. I wanna say that's what Garmin support is talking about. It's a really neat feature, as it does give you a visual of what you just did, and also gives you how much elevation you've done on the track. I "train" mostly by elevation gained rather than distance, so that's the screen I have on, constantly Wink

But, for a regular track, the 20(x) should show those high and low points for particular tracks, which I find useful, provided that the elevation data is included. If elevation is missing, you would need to have a database of all those points and fill them in, which none of these devices I suspect have built in.

Looking at the track at,

http://topofusion.com/divide/TourDivide2016_v2_10k.gpx

It DOES have elevation data, so it should come up on both the 20(x) and 30(x).

Perhaps it's the SIZE of the track that causes this data to be shown? I know that if you put a track that > 10k points in a 20(x), it just throws out data it can't hold in memory.

If you put say, a 2500 point track of the GDMBR, will the high/low points show up? Attached is the GDMBR route with only 2500 points. If you load it up in your 20(x), do the high low points show up?

FYI...I called Garmin on why I could not find vertical gain on etrax20x and as it turns out, this function is not available on this unit.  I shoulda spent the extra $100 and got the 30X.

Maybe not knowing how much climbing you've done will be a blessing! Ignorance is bliss kind of thing. Good luck!

Yes, I have the high/low and most of the other stuff you mentioned.  What I am looking for is simply at the end of the day, I want to see how much elevation gain I peddled (i.e. 11,565' vertical gain).  Most of the Garmin products have this...but not the 20X...according to Garmin support.

Hey all, I am looking to ITT it starting Monday June 6th. So far. I have filled out all the info with the links posted earlier and set up my personal spot and paid my 40 clams to trackleaers and signed on with the SMS etc . However, I don't actually have any confirmation that I am all good with these. Like, when should I see my name on trackleaders? I haven't received any test SMS either. I just want to make sure everything is kosher before driving to NM for my start. How to check? Whom to ask? I understand Matt and Scott are super busy, so I don't want to hassle anyone... but the jitters are getting the best of me.

I only see 2 ITT's listed on Trackleaders and I don't know if you are one of them. Have you emailed either Scott or Matthew?

As a reminder, even as an ITT you're welcome to call in updates to MTBCast. Just call 888-866-4491 and leave a message.

Hi Everyone,
In addition to the bike retail stores at the start line, I'll be avail again to help riders and racers with bike mechanical issues, etc in Banff.   I've been wrenching bikes for 20+ years in stores in the Banff area, and working independently for 10+.   Lots of work from the home, from kids bikes, to top XC and endurance racers, as well as working lots of races and events (Single track6, Transrockies,  MDH100, lots of grand fondos, etc)   I have also ridden the Banff to whitefish sections of the TD route (a few times) so have a good idea of what both the bike, and you will encounter on the first section.
http://www.fatskideals.com/race_support.html
I have basic parts in stock, and can order most things for you with a few days notice.
email or text is best way to contact me,
403-762-8566
dave_williams@shaw.ca   I might not be as fast with messages thru this site.

Let me know if I can help you guys out with the event at all.   Happy to do repairs, or just a consult over a beverage.

(also, moderators of this site, I hope this post is OK, and not crossing some line of "advertising" vs "helping"    please contact me, and we can make this work for the riders, the moderators, and me)

thanks

dave

bump:    I'm around and have most basic stuff you might forget, or want to have as extra, but always best to bring your bike to banff ready to roll.    I'm around for the next until the GD, and avail for mechanical work as needed.    email or text is best to contact me before you arrive, or we WILL make time to fix yours stuff when you get to banff too.

I imagine Scott and Matthew are super busy as you suggested.  I did an ITT last July, did all the things you mentioned, yet I did not appear on Track Leaders until about an hour prior to starting.

Best of luck!

Hi,

After reading about the difficult officers at the customs office on the route I'm wondering if taking only the Global Entry Card will be enough. Has anyone used that to cross back into the US in Roosville?

Thanks.

We had no issues with the Border Patrol officers coming back into the US last year (I am a US citizen). I had my paper passport with me. I have a friend that went in 2013 and came across with no issues using the card.

Getting nervous, ha ha.  Bike is packed, went through my gear and chucked a bunch of stuff (not packing my fears), nervously checking the weather forecasts, etc.

I'm going to fly up there on the 7th.

My name is on the tracker board.   My SPOT is awake and pinking (sent me an update).  How do I get my bubble to show up on the tracker with my pre-race position?

Turn on tracking the button with the boot on it. I showed up about 5 min after I turned it on.

I got an email from Matt; the problem was that I didn't have a share page listed.

Fixed the problem.  I'll turn on my Spot when I get home and then I guess I'm official, ha ha.

Hey All,

You may recall the amazing elevation profiles Shane Wighton put together last year - really amazing (especially for a data visualization geek like me). I stole his pictures, and added @Joraff's words and  mashed them up into this:

I'm printing these out on water proof paper and bring them along. THANK YOU Shane and Joraff! If anybody would like the full set they're here:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B3vQQoA6xta3VVN2aTJRZ1pFc1U&usp=sharing

If there's demand, I could possible print up a few more sets of these before I head out on Monday.
