Woot, my wife and I are doing an "ITT" beginning 3/11 too, John. We're not aiming for a time, just for some decompression from work/grad school during a little Spring Break.  Trying to figure out a ride down to PCL from PHX since our ride canceled on us. Any recommendations for shuttles? |

Hey Guys. Looking to ride the 300 in October. Going to be doing my first bike packing trip in a couple weeks. Just an out and back along Passages 16/17. Done a couple centuries on the road bike, some backpacking on the AZT. Definitely looking forward to combining the two!
Looking for some feedback from the veteran riders here... Which section of the 300 do you think will be the most challenging for me? Also, what's your go-to no-frills GPS to use so that I can follow the GPX file while on the trail?

From the Gila River at Kelvin all the way to Picketpost is likely the toughest, not only because it is slower, rockier more technical riding, but because it comes at the end of what is already a brutal ride and you'll likely be exhausted. That, and Oracle Ridge is another morale killer. I don't mean to discourage you at all. They're both most certainly doable but should be taken on with a healthy dose of respect and humility. I don't disagree with the answers above, but the canelos right out of the gate will be a great indication (though by no means a guarantee) of your ability to complete the route imo. Something about working your tail off for 5-8 hours and going ~30 miles will do that. Yes, it takes that long unless you are a mutant, of which there are a few. You mention centuries on the road bike, but how much MTB do you do? Legit dirt skills on a loaded bike will be needed as you can imagine. For no frills and SOLID gps unit, the eTrex 20/30 are battle tested and used by many. They take AA batteries which makes powering them a pretty simple endeavor. |

That is a solid day ride just going one way and without bikepacking gear - if you are successful bikepacking this as an OAB, you are definitely capable of handling anything else you might encounter on the 300. Be weary of that section, especially the climb away from the river all the way to picketpost. It can be wicked hot and it is very isolated and dry - be prepared to filter a full load of Gila water before the climb up from there |

What do people do for sleeping arrangements to avoid predators? I?m trying to wrap my brain around hopping off my bike in the middle of the desert and unrolling a sleeping bag. Thanks.

Well, the bike is loaded and ready to roll on Thursday. I thought I had cherrypicked the perfect weekend for the 300...then I double checked the 10-day forecast y'day morning. Rain/snow incoming!! I'm actually looking forward to it. I've had a great bikepacking winter so far, might as well break out the bivy & rain gear for this one. I'm stoked to be kicking off the northbound spring ITTs. After Picketpost, my dot will be continuing on, but only for a short bit as I'm riding home from there.
I'm really looking forward to checking out Hog Canyon. No plans to detour to Patagonia or Sonoita, Rocking K will be my resupply hopefully semi-early on Day 2.

So I'm throwing my hat in ring for a spring ITT of the 800. The new route bypassing Patagonia and Sonita. It may mean no evening beer for the TubeSSnapper  It sounds like Sonita is now 3 miles off course.....possibly a negligible difference for non racer racer-type? My planning question is really about the time difference to Kentucky Camp. With the Patagonia by pass AND the Hog canyon reroute. Will it change the time needed (hours of riding) to reach KC? I last rode this in 2018 and arrived in KC after dark,well after dark I should say. AND I plan to start Sunday 3/28. I am soliciting ideas on how to get to the border. On my last AZT journey I rode there from Sierra Vista the afternoon before and camped near the border. It was not ideal. Could I catch an early morning Uber to Montezuma pass? Local knowledge would be appreciated. And of course....thank you to the curators of this event...the GPS files...the 411 and beta information..... both are inspirational and practical. |

Great question and one I've been pondering as well. I tend to think it is likely quicker - definitely so if you factor in the normal time spent in town, but I have yet to see any beta on it. My thinking is there is potential for less headwind or at least not directly into it. It looks like there is a potential short HAB at mile 38.5 (of the 300 route). Looks like a straight up push to gain 400 feet in about a half mile. Other than that, it looks reasonable and rideable based on the topo. Who knows in real life though haha. |

Looks like JS should be on the Flume trail or beyond and in KC before dark. I did Hog canyon in like 08 or 9 so fuzzy memory is nothing too bad, assuming the new trail being build at easier grades it should be easier overall.

For what it's worth, John had an attempt back in November (before Hog Canyon was added) and he made it to Kentucky Camp in just about 12 hours on the nose. If I remember right, there was a small snafu in the track he followed since the canelo re-route wasn't quite finished, but I don't think it added any significant time. In any case, he tracked at Kentucky Camp right around 10 hours and 45 minutes today.

Could be an interesting night tonight and Saturday. Forecast for Mt Lemmon showing heavy snow overnight tonite, and snow showers tomorrow. Looks like he's stopped just above Prison Camp. Hopefully the snow isn't so bad. Expect a morning push (possibly literally) up the mtn. Oracle Ridge could be interesting but desert tomorrow could be all time, though! Quite the difference from the scorching temps we usually get.

I haven't ridden yet the Patagonia/Sonoita bypass. But since you're doing the 800, also take a look at the new Sunnyside addition before PCL. For planning, I think of it as a southern 'extension' of the Canelos. Its not fast. Have an awesome ride! |
