Drama! They skipped Bill Williams mtn, instead staying on pavement and bombing into Williams. There has to be a good reason for this - any AZ locals know what may have caused this?
After a long section of road they surely didn't want to miss that section. It's pretty sweet. Maybe they just threw their last punches...

Dave, according to Kurt they all blew up. All three were dehydrated and cramping. They are going to get a motel in Williams. No donuts for anyone.

Well gotta give them guys some credit, they sure gave it hell. Pretty much flew up Mingus. But yea, no donuts  Amazing how closely they are all matched. I thought for sure one of them would fare a bit better than the rest and make it to the end. Aaron's record lives on! |

It was a good run, although I was hoping for some early morning action tomorrow. 113 miles in 14 hours. Wonder if that half can be done in 14 hours. To be continued.....Or wait, maybe someone will sneak out late tonight and go ride Bill Williams and continue on while their adversaries sleep....Perhaps this is the Scott's plan?! OMG!!! Let's stay up and see if we see any blue dot movement. |

What is the water situation from the Verde to Williams. When we rode it was hot. We ran out of water before Williams. Haven't scouted for water and don't have the maps on this computer.

Looks like Kurt is up and moving around? His blue dot isn't with the others but down the street, they going to push on this morning after some sleep and refuel...

Well, that didn't quite go as hoped. But I can't say I'm not surprised with my body finally reaching it's limit after a month of all sorts of racing. But it was rather incredible to see all three of us succumb to some combination of fatigue and dehydration at more or less the same time. Riding in Sedona yesterday morning was the first day since the first day of the AZT300 that my legs actually felt good. Unfortunately, that lasted until near the Verde River, and then things went downhill quickly as I battled the worst cramping I've ever experienced and a stomach that refused any food. Aaron and Scott soon caught me, and they were both looking rough. We SLOWLY limped up the 5000' climb, struggling to simply make it to Williams. After a big dinner, a cheap motel room, and two breakfasts, we all felt human enough to ride slowly, so we did just that for a while and enjoyed being out there before blasting back to Sedona on pavement since I had to be home this evening. All in all, two days on the bike are hard to beat, but luckily, I only have to experience misery like yesterday's once a year at most.
The moral of the story? None of us are anywhere near recovered from our AZT and subsequent adventures. I think we all knew that yesterday morning, but it's hard to turn down the opportunity for a little adventure.

The thing I love about bikepack racing is it's still quite experimental. And, well, experiments sometimes fail -- spectacularly. Kurt's attack on the 5000' Mingus climb was an impressive display athleticism, but it proved to be our undoing. The mushroom cloud from our collective explosion could be seen for miles, but no one was anywhere near to see it. I was lucky that I didn't cramp (see pic of Aaron (!)), but was still depleted/wrecked in just about every other way. Limit found, indeed.
It was still a great time, especially getting to slowly tour with these guys, who though I have raced quite a bit, haven't really ever ridden with.
Thanks for the great idea and challenge, Kurt. Can't wait to give this loop another go, but next time with better legs and energy. I doubt even without chasing Kurt up Mingus I would have been able to finish in less than 36 hours.... at least not without supernatural amounts of suffering.
Thanks for following along, sorry it was such a short show! I'll never forget the impact crater site, where all of us sprawled all over the road, cramping and writhing around in pain. Then laughing, and more laughing, which only caused more pain. It was so pathetic and so awesome at the same time.
