Scott, I am planning on holding an informal race on the AlCan Highway likely start date is June 21st in Fairbanks with finish in Dawson Creek. At the moment it is myself and Jay P. who are committed to riding it but hope it will grow into an annual event and many others will join us this year. Please add it to the calandar. I also posted up a new thread on it and once I have a website up and running will post the link. This will be much simpler and beautiful then doing a solo self supported RAAM. We will need SPOT support from you folks with maybe a half dozen checkpoints. Thinking the record (Jay I imagine) will be sub 6 days and for us in the over 50 crowd around 7 days (1440 miles with lots of ups and downs).

well thats sure a good route for a bear lover like yourself... i've driven up to whitehorse from banff a long time ago and i seem to remember a fairly significant stretch of gravel too.
so why stop at Dawson - continue on to Jasper - or... Banff...? I may be a bit biased but the section from Grand Cache to Banff would be some of the nicest scenery one would ever ride through...

Probably because Fairbanks to Dawson is the official span of the Alaska Highway. Mile 1,400 to 0. The highway is well-maintained, only gravel would be short sections that are under construction (usually there are several in the summer.) I have the opinion that veering onto the Cassiar Highway would be a better stretch of road for fast-touring, but I understand the aesthetic of riding only the AlCan, especially in the context of a race precedent. Sounds like a great event, and June is a particularly nice time for all-night road riding up there. Of course, you have to keep a constant vigilance for clueless RV drivers.

I totally understand the sentiment of the route... I just kind of like a race that starts or finishes in my hometown!

Oh I want to do this so bad, if I can get the time off and get to fairbanks then I'll be in, gonna take me a couple months to figure out if it'll work or no. MAJOR PROPS BEARDOG, way to get something dope going.
I'm hoping to do an ITT of the transam in 2014 and considering making it a "formal" race.

This race looks like another great adventure! Its now on my bucket list. I just talked with Jay P and he seems pretty fired up about it! I'll be tuned in for sure when it goes down! I can't wait to see the bike set-ups, I'm thinking a set-up similar to Jay P's RAAM bike. Nice work organizing this Beardog!

I'm in. Just thinking -- pedaling from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks in time to catch the start of the AlCan race could make for a scenic warm up. Once the race is over, pointing south from Dawson Creek to Banff could make for a pleasant cool down. And then, isn't it only a few thousand bumpy miles south to Antelope Wells? Hmm....
